Holiday apartment in Montecchio: sandstone hills, forests and culture

Montecchio is situated on a sandstone hill on the right bank of the Era River and amid the forests of Le Serre, a rural area between Montecchio and Peccioli. This combination of rock, woodland and river landscape shapes the character of the village and provides an interesting starting point for a journey in which nature and culture stand closely side by side.

Distinctive traces in the landscape and history

An unusual cultural feature is the artwork “Rilievi”. Its arrangement follows the Hartmann grid; geobiologists located the radiating nodes on which the artist worked. The work adds a subject to Montecchio’s distinctive landscape character that clearly differs from the village’s historic buildings and archaeological traces.

The sandstone rock on which Montecchio stands is crossed by tunnels. They may date from Etruscan times, but probably originated in the Middle Ages, and were used as shelters during the war. The remains of the ancient temple of Ortaglia, which was destroyed by fire, are also located in the Montecchio area. The remains and finds from this temple are now displayed at the Museo Archeologico di Peccioli.

Chapel, procession and regional culture

At the entrance to Borgo Montecchio stands the chapel “Cappella della Domenica delle Palme”. It bears this name because Mass is celebrated there exclusively on this feast day. The Festa sulle Serre also connects a special religious tradition with Montecchio: on Saturday, 2 May 2026, at 9 p.m., a torchlight procession departing from Peccioli and Montecchio, accompanied by songs and prayers, led to the Chiesa della Madonna delle Serre.

The Parco Preistorico Peccioli, an archaeological site, is located nearby. Castello dei Vicari, a castle, is also situated in the Montecchio area. Both destinations add different historical themes to the picture of the surrounding area: while the temple remains and museum finds point to the ancient past, the castle represents another architectural trace of regional history.

Excursions between gardens, palaces and the coast

The wider region around Montecchio contains several destinations with very different character. These include the Teatro Romano Volterra, an ancient site, and the Palazzo Viti, a palace. As a contrast to these cultural attractions, the area also features Spiagge bianche, a beach, as well as Bagno Aurora and Bagno Ausonia, each a beach. The Giardino Bella di Mai complements this selection as a garden.

When planning a holiday apartment or holiday house in Montecchio, this initially makes it possible to determine the desired focus of the trip: the forests of Le Serre and the sandstone rock, the chapel and the historic traces in the village, or the various cultural, garden and beach destinations in the surrounding region. This keeps the choice of accommodation closely aligned with your own interests, without limiting Montecchio to just one type of holiday.
