Discover Peccioli: Open-Air Art, History and Events

Peccioli combines public art, sacred and archaeological history, events, cycling culture and a local speciality. The themes range from an Etruscan sanctuary and a Romanesque parish church to contemporary installations, a planetarium, the 5.3-kilometre “Costellazione” cycle route, events at the Anfiteatro Fonte Mazzola, as well as exhibitions and valley views at the Palazzo Senza Tempo in Peccioli.

Art and History in Peccioli

The Museo di Palazzo Pretorio’s Incisioni e Litografie – Donazione Vito Merlini collection comprises 279 prints, lithographs, woodcuts and screen prints. The Museo Archeologico di Peccioli displays finds from the Etruscan sanctuary of Ortaglia and from the archaeological area of Santa Mustiola.

In the immediate vicinity of Peccioli, the Ortaglia archaeological site preserves the remains of a sanctuary complex dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. The Pieve di San Verano in Peccioli dates from the 11th century. The Museo d'Arte Sacra is housed in the Cappella dell'Assunta within the Romanesque Pieve di San Verano. It contains a 13th-century panel attributed to Michele di Baldovino. The Pieve di San Verano also houses works from the Pisan school.

Open-Air Art, Exhibitions and Valley Views

The Torre Campanaria di Peccioli is 42 metres high. The MACCA – Museo D'Arte Contemporanea a Cielo Aperto is an open-air museum spread across Peccioli and its districts; its collection comprises more than 70 works, predominantly large-scale installations. Contemporary art is therefore distributed across several locations rather than being confined to a single exhibition space.

The Palazzo Senza Tempo hosts temporary and permanent exhibitions. A large panoramic terrace offers views across the valley. The exhibitions and the valley views are located at the same address. The Museo di Palazzo Pretorio also preserves three collections of icons. In Peccioli, visitors therefore encounter sacred artworks and contemporary installations alongside prints and archaeological finds.

Events and Constellations

The Anfiteatro Fonte Mazzola hosts concerts, performances and summer festivals. The 11 Lune theatre festival takes place every year in July at the Anfiteatro Fonte Mazzola; the Coppa Sabatini cycling race takes place in October.

The Anfiteatro Fonte Mazzola can be reached on foot from Peccioli’s main square in just a few minutes and has an adjacent car park. The Centro Astronomico di Libbiano includes a planetarium that helps visitors understand constellations and seasonal changes. Cycle Route and Local Flavours

The 5.3-kilometre “Costellazione” cycle route is a cycling route in Peccioli. The route provides a distinct focus alongside the events and cultural offerings.
