CAI Trail 46 leads from Gragnana’s Ponte Storto via Gabbellaccia and the Canale dei Bocciari to La Villa in Tenerano. The Fontia–Carrara stage of the Cammino di Aronte is classified as easy (difficulty level F) and reaches Gragnana via a mule track.

The circular route from Gragnana uses ridge path 193 and the old path 184. It can be extended with a visit to the abandoned village of Vecchiorla. Along the circular route, there is a small car park about 700 metres past Gragnana, on the left next to the cemetery. The types of route are clearly distinct: CAI Trail 46 and the Fontia–Carrara stage connect several places, while the circular route from Gragnana is centred on its starting point.

The Via dei Cavatori starts from the village of Macera in Gragnana. In the past, it enabled the residents of Gragnana to get to work in the quarries of Torano. The Via dei Cavatori was restored by CAI Carrara and the Associazione Gragnana Nostra. This path therefore connects the local network of routes with the former working world of the quarries, without its historical function necessarily being equated with its present-day use.

Churches, marble, and local traces

The Chiesa di San Michele in Gragnana dates from the 18th century and was built over a medieval predecessor. The church contains a walnut-wood choir that comes from the former Church of San Pietro in Bagnara in Massa. The building thus tells of the long development of this sacred site while also preserving a furnishing from Massa.

The Oratorio di Sant’Antonio da Padova contains an altar made of polychrome marble. In the historic part of Gragnana, some residential buildings with 17th-century marble portals have also survived. Marble work can therefore be found in the oratory as well as on the façades of historic residential buildings.

Along Gragnana’s streets, some of the old Tavolieri carved into stone are still visible; these are historic board games. The local dialect of Gragnana is known as “dialetto gragnanino”. Both features are found directly within the village or in the local language.
