Cycling route, mule track and historic connections through Torre

The Tempagnano–Torre–San Graziano–Vetrianello–Loppeglia cycling route passes through Torre. Its specific length of 8 km provides a clear scale for planning a day trip without assuming any additional distances. In the Tempagnano area, an ancient mule track also connects the villages of Frantoio and Torre.

The road passing through Tempagnano connects the area around Borgo a Mozzano with Versilia via the S. Graziano Pass. In the Media Valle del Serchio, the final two stages of the Via Matildica del Volto Santo run from Barga to Borgo a Mozzano and from Borgo a Mozzano to Lucca. Borgo a Mozzano is the shared location of these two consecutive stages.

Churches, art and architectural history around Torre

In nearby Tempagnano, the Church of San Prospero stands at the foot of a medieval crenellated bell tower. It houses 17th-century paintings, a recently restored 15th-century silver processional cross and valuable sacred furnishings.

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Valdottavo has a fabric dating from the late 11th or early 12th century. In Diecimo, the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta features an interior with three naves separated by two-coloured pillars, as well as a baptismal font and an ambo pulpit.

In Partigliano, the Church of Saints Giusto and Clemente preserves a late-medieval wooden Annunciation group. The group is largely attributed to the unknown Maestro di Partigliano, who was active from the late 14th to the early 15th century.

The Romitorio di San Bartolomeo is a single-nave church with an apse in a centuries-old holm-oak forest near the former Bargiglio fortress. The Bargiglio fortress was demolished in 1373.

The Torre del Bargiglio offers a 360-degree panorama stretching from the peaks of the Apuan Alps across the Serchio Valley and the fortresses of the Garfagnana to the plain of Lucca.

War history, the Gothic Line, chestnuts and regional cuisine

The municipal area of Borgo a Mozzano contains one of the few intact sections of the Tuscan Gothic Line. Mountain paths lead to preserved bunkers, tunnels and other wartime outposts.

Farina di Neccio DOP is made from chestnuts and represents the traditional crafts, flavours and rural traditions of this area. The chestnut thus connects the trees at the San Graziano Pass with a product representing craftsmanship, flavour and rural tradition.
