Casone near Pitigliano: Cultural Sites and Trails

Casone represents two strong interests: the cultural sites of Pitigliano and the trails and landscape destinations around Il Casone. Historic sites, museums, Jewish heritage, and trails of varying lengths give the area its different facets.

Culture between Casone and Pitigliano

In the Casone district of Pitigliano, the Church of San Paolo della Croce forms part of the local townscape. It was built between 1928 and 1934. In Pitigliano itself, the Jewish Quarter includes the synagogue and former premises of the Jewish community. These include a ritual bath, a dye works, a cellar, an oven, and a kosher butcher’s shop. The La Piccola Gerusalemme association organizes public tours.

The Jewish Cemetery of Pitigliano also offers a distinct historical focus. Its institutional origins date back to the mid-16th century. The cemetery contains 19th-century marble monuments with figurative sculptures. Pitigliano is also home to the Museo di Palazzo Orsini and the Museo Civico Archeologico “Enrico Pellegrini”.

The Vie-Cave Tour is therefore the longer route, while the Via Cava dell'Annunziata combines a shorter distance with a moderate difficulty level.

The Via Cava di Fratenuti north of Pitigliano can be reached by car and on foot. From the centre of Pitigliano, the drive takes approximately ten minutes; from the historic centre, the walk takes around 20 minutes.

Pitigliano can be reached via the A1 motorway, the Orvieto exit, the SS71 towards Bolsena, the SS2 Cassia, and the SS74.

Tradition in Casone

Traditionally, the Festa di San Paolo della Croce patronal festival was held in Casone on the last weekend of June.
