Historical Traces in the Townscape

A stream rich in water flowing near Rio nell'Elba powered numerous water mills until the 19th century. One historic site is the Eremo di Santa Caterina. It probably dates from the Romanesque period and was extended and remodelled in 1634. The Eremo stands on the remains of a hilltop fortress built by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC. The Eremo di Santa Caterina has traditionally been associated with a festival celebrated every year on the Monday after Easter. The site occupies an area of approximately one hectare near the Eremo di Santa Caterina and was established in 1997 as a centre for researching the plant biodiversity of Elba and the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Explanatory panels provide information about the plant species collected, their characteristics and their traditional medicinal and culinary uses.

Casa del Parco in the Town Centre

The Casa del Parco is an old laundry covering approximately 65 square metres in the town centre of Rio nell'Elba, in Loc. I Canali. It serves as a visitor centre and as an information and reception point for the park. At the same time, it is dedicated to Elba's eastern slope and its mining traditions.

The “La Via del Mare” cycling tour reaches Rio nell'Elba; it is followed by a 3-kilometre climb with an average gradient of around 8%.
