Coastline with a Lake and Mineral Traces

Terranera Beach is a narrow pebble beach that separates a small green lake of mineral origin from the open sea. Its blackish sand glitters with hematite particles associated with nearby mineral and iron ore deposits. These mineral traces link the coastal landscape to the town's mining history.

Barbarossa Beach lies in a small south-facing bay. It is suitable for underwater activities; such activities are also possible at Terranera Beach.

Hiking and Mining History

The Percorso del Santuario di Monserrato begins in Porto Azzurro and is designated as a challenging four-hour hike. For planning the day, the stated duration of four hours provides a clear time frame; the challenging rating also indicates that sufficient time should be allocated for this activity.

La Piccola Miniera e Museo Minerario Etrusco offers another way to explore the region's mining history. The museum welcomes visitors by prior reservation and contains a faithful reconstruction of a hematite mining site. Prior reservation should therefore be taken into account when planning a visit to this museum.

Historic Buildings and Religious Sites

Madonna del Monserrato is an 18th- and 19th-century Marian shrine in Porto Azzurro. The Fortezza di San Giacomo is also known as Fortezza di Longone and was built in 1603 by Don Garcia de Toledo.

Its bastions and star-shaped layout reflect a design inspired by the fortress of Antwerp. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine and the Cappella del Sacro Cuore di Maria also date from the 18th century. The fortress dates from an earlier period than the shrine and the 18th-century buildings.

Festivals, Piazza and Schiaccia briaca

The Festa della Madonna di Monserrato is celebrated in Porto Azzurro every year on September 8. The Festa del Pescatore takes place on July 25, with religious rituals, food stalls in the town's streets and fireworks in the bay. The two festivals take place at different times of the year and provide seasonal points of reference for stays in Porto Azzurro.

Piazza Matteotti lies by the sea and serves as a venue for cultural events and entertainment. Schiaccia briaca is part of the culinary offering in Porto Azzurro's pastry shops and at the town's traditional festivals.

Sheltered Mooring

Porto Azzurro also has a sheltered mooring where ferries and tourist boats can dock.
