Near Ponte Caliano stands the Torre Santa Flora, built between the 12th and 13th centuries as a defensive tower to protect the Arno and the road. The chapel of the castle in Castelnuovo was decorated with frescoes in the early years of the 16th century by a pupil of Don Agnolo di Lorentino. The Centro di Documentazione della Cultura Archeologica preserves finds from the Subbiano area dating from the 7th century BC to the 14th century and displays them in two exhibition rooms together with further finds from Subbiano and Capolona. In July, archaeological topics are explored and presented there every year as part of the Notti dell’Archeologia. The Museo Quelli della Karin offers educational activities and meetings and conducts historical research.

Mills, chestnuts and community festivals

Near the hamlet of Falciano in the municipality of Subbiano is a characteristic mill complex whose history can be traced back to the 16th century. The Mattesini family’s watermills in Falciano are well preserved and remain operational with their stone milling mechanisms. Vogognano is an important chestnut-growing area with old chestnut-drying huts. The tradition of blessing animals and bread in honor of Saint Anthony is still maintained there, followed by a traditional communal lunch. In the Castello di Valenzano, the Ristorante al Castello has a panoramic terrace and a wine cellar with wines from the region. The Cena Medievale nel Borgo is considered a July event featuring jugglers, musicians, performers and typical dishes from Casentino.
