The Rocca di Pierle is now a ruin. The present-day Rocca was built from 1371 onward over an older structure documented since the 11th century. In recent years, safety works have been carried out to protect the building fabric and people. The rocky outcrop on which the Rocca stands dominates the Mercatale valley and offers an excellent viewpoint. The municipality of Cortona included Christmas markets at the Rocca in its Christmas programmes for 2024 and 2025.

San Biagio and Pierle’s Building History

Outside the castle walls stands the small Romanesque church of San Biagio di Pierle. Over time, a small village developed near the castle. The church dates back to the 11th century, was rebuilt in 1505, and was further restored in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its gabled roof, bell gable on the left, and apse covered with stone slabs give the building a clearly recognizable appearance. The Feast of San Biagio on February 3 includes the blessing of the bread.

Hiking Trails to Monte Ginezzo and on the Sentiero della Rocca

The Church of San Biagio is considered the starting point for a hike to Monte Ginezzo and lies opposite the Rocca di Pierle. The hiking route initially follows a forest track and then a mule track to the 928-meter-high summit. From there, sweeping views extend over the Apennines, the Sibillini Mountains, Monte Amiata and Lake Trasimeno. The Sentiero della Rocca connects Pierle with Sodo via Monte Maestrino, Monte Ginezzo, Portole and Croce di Sant’Egidio, using hiking trails CAI 562, CAI 50 and CAI 563. Its points of interest include the Rocca di Pierle, a paved road, chestnut groves, the meadows of Ginezzo, the Cerventosa dam and forests predominantly consisting of oak trees.

Monte Maestrino and the Villa Guglielmi Palace on Isola Maggiore are located in the immediate vicinity of Pierle.
