Torreone among forest paths and Franciscan destinations

The Sentiero di Pietra runs through forests dominated mainly by oak trees. The Eremo Francescano “Le Celle” is one of the area’s Franciscan destinations. Visitors can explore the grounds of the hermitage and take part in the spiritual activities offered by the religious community.

Routes to Sant’Egidio and Le Celle

The Sentiero di Pietra includes the Torreone–Sant’Egidio section and follows CAI Trail 561. The Chiesa di San Carlo al Torreone is a stop along the Sentiero di Pietra.

From the Santuario di Santa Margherita, the circular route “Anello Torreone, Croce di Sant’Egidio, Le Celle e Torreone” descends to Torreone, following CAI Trail 561S. Via Croce di Sant’Egidio and Le Celle, the Anello returns to Torreone. Near Torreone, the circular route continues along a signposted path beside the Chiesa di San Carlo.

Pine forest, Roman road and views

After the last houses, the circular route “Anello Torreone, Croce di Sant’Egidio, Le Celle e Torreone” enters a pine forest. Its paved path is reminiscent of an ancient Roman road, forming a clearly recognizable section along the route.

The circular route also reaches a viewpoint overlooking Cortona and the Valdichiana and passes through a chestnut grove. From the viewpoint, there are views of both landscapes along the route.

San Carlo and archaeological traces

The Chiesa di San Carlo al Torreone was built in 1632 by decision of Bishop Della Robbia for the faithful who lived in the Torreone area. The building is simple and has a single nave, three altars and a roof with exposed rafters.

The Strada romana del Torreone is part of Cortona’s suburban archaeological tour. For the monuments in the archaeological park, the MAEC provides documentation, reception, orientation and visitor management services.

In the village of Torre Mozza, below the Fortezza del Girifalco, an interesting section of Etruscan structures has been preserved; it remained outside the Renaissance redevelopment.

Franciscan stops

In Tuscany, the Via di Francesco leads to the historic Franciscan hermitage of Le Celle before reaching Cortona. At the Eremo Francescano “Le Celle”, visitors can explore the grounds. The religious community offers spiritual activities there.
