Terontola combines a railway-shaped local history with cycling and hiking routes.

Railway station, local history and culture

At Terontola railway station, there is a stele depicting Gino Bartali, who was nicknamed “Ginettaccio”.

In the second half of the 19th century, the establishment and development of the railway led to railway employees settling here. This soon gave rise to a new place called Terontola Scalo; from then on, the older settlement was known as Terontola Alta.

The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Terontola is among the buildings of recognised cultural interest.

On 8 March 2026, the ASD Ciclismo Terontola association organised the 23rd edition of the Bacialla Bike. In addition to the national mountain bike competition, it featured a route for non-competitive recreational cyclists.

At the 21st edition of the Bacialla Bike, the main route was 45 kilometres long, included 1,500 metres of elevation gain and ran entirely on paved surfaces. For a day of cycling here, it is not only the kilometres that count, but also the 1,500 metres of elevation gain and the entirely paved surface.

The Classic route covered 28 kilometres and 900 metres of elevation gain; it was also open to e-bikes and non-competitive participants. Compared with the main route, this therefore represents a different combination of distance and elevation gain.

The Terontola–Assisi–Terontola gravel route is 143 kilometres long and follows roads that Gino Bartali used for training. A gravel event was also announced for 23 August 2026. Participants could register from 7 a.m. at the Dopolavoro ferroviario di Terontola and choose between the 143-kilometre Terontola–Assisi–Terontola route and a 50-kilometre route along the Franciscan roads of Cortona. The two options differ not only in distance, but also in their route via Assisi or Cortona and the respective roads.

A panoramic cycling route towards Terontola is 34 kilometres long, moderately difficult to easy, and suitable for hybrid bikes, mountain bikes or gravel bikes.

On foot, the Via Romea Germanica’s seventh daily stage consists of a 13-kilometre hike from Terontola to Castiglion del Lago, with 70 metres of ascent and 30 metres of descent. For planning the day, the 70 metres of ascent and 30 metres of descent can be considered separately.

Sagra and regional cuisine

At the Sagra di Bacialla, you can enjoy typical cuisine from the Val di Chiana. The menu changes every evening of the festival.

In Terontola, the Sagra di Bacialla also features dancing and other entertainment every evening.

The cycling route at Lake Trasimeno is easy to reach from Terontola railway station.

In the 2025 race, the Bacialla Bike started at Parco Madre Teresa in Terontola.
