Terlano is surrounded by vineyards and orchards and combines a rural landscape with a winemaking tradition that dates back more than 2,000 years. The Terlan Wine Trail begins at Cantina Terlano and comprises a total of 20 information panels. Historic buildings and medieval traces

One of the area’s distinctive buildings is Terlano’s 75-metre-high bell tower, known as the “leaning tower of Terlano”, which was rebuilt between 1891 and 1893. Terlano parish church is a late Gothic building dating from the 14th century and houses South Tyrol’s richest collection of frescoes. The ruins of Castel Casanova (Maultasch) also lead back into history: they probably date from the 13th century and were built as a double castle. A steep path leads to the ruins of Castel Maultasch in about 20 minutes. Niedertor et Servitus is a historical-cultural association dedicated to researching and presenting medieval everyday life and its culture in historic Tyrol, particularly in the late 14th and early 15th centuries.

Cantina Terlano was founded in 1893 and offers guided tours with wine tastings. A short tour through Terlano’s asparagus fields is followed by a tasting of three wines at Cantina Terlano. Asparagus from Terlano is marketed under the quality brand and quality seal “Margarete”; asparagus cultivation in Vilpiano, Settequerce and Terlano has a centuries-old tradition. Recurring events include the Climbing Tree Festival, held every two years and featuring the traditional “Bandltanz” dance, music and gastronomic specialities. The Hoametfescht takes place every year on the first or second weekend in August and combines gastronomic specialities, music and traditional games.

Vilpiano: waterfall, plateau and trails

In the Vilpiano district, the Rio Meltina plunges 82 metres into the depths and subsequently forms the Vilpiano Waag; the waterfall is designated as a natural heritage site. The cable car to Meltina also starts in Vilpiano. It reaches the Salto plateau in four minutes, where there is a network of hiking and mountain-bike trails. Terlan therefore offers a range of different experiences side by side: the Wine Trail with its information panels, historic destinations such as the castle ruins, the wooded or agricultural surroundings, as well as trails for hikers and mountain bikers.
