Historic Auer between churches and the village center

The historic village center of Auer comprises a maze of narrow streets, a massive wall and historic manor houses. Baumgarten Castle is also located in the historic center. St. Peter’s Church is a Gothic church built in the 16th century, whose origins date back to the 11th century. Its present nave was begun around 1475 and completed in 1526; the north tower with its 13th-century bell tower is based on a Romanesque predecessor.

St. Daniel’s Church also features notable details of art and architectural history. It houses a late Gothic winged altar dating from 1525. The present structure probably dates from the 14th century and features lancet windows and chancel angles on the south wall. The range of Auer’s cultural heritage therefore extends from medieval ecclesiastical architecture to later historic townscapes.

Trails through the landscape and nature

A circular hiking trail follows the Schwarzenbach stream to a waterfall. The waterfall plunges into a 120 m deep gorge. Another distinctive section of the trail is the Katzenleiter, a stone staircase with 540 steps carved into the rock.

A hike to the ruins of Castelfeder begins at the Schwarzenbach sports zone in Auer and follows Trail No. 5 through woodland and scrubland uphill to the Castelfeder ruins and the Barbara Chapel. Castelfeder itself is a protected hill and an important archaeological and natural-history landscape. Traces from Roman times, old walls, ponds, dry grasslands and ancient oaks characterize this special landscape.

Winegrowing traditions and historic railway tracks

The Clemens Waldthaler winery in Auer is part of the region’s character. It is located in the heart of the Lagrein and Pinot Noir area in South Tyrol’s Lower Adige Valley and is now run by the seventh generation of winegrowers. As part of a winery visit in Ora, the cellar tour includes a tasting of four wines and lasts 1.5 hours.

The history of the Fleimstal railway is also present in Auer. The Areal ex Fleimstalerbahn ensemble includes a preserved section of the connecting station of the railway built between 1916 and 1918 as the Auer–Predazzo narrow-gauge railway, including a water tower, locomotive and carriage sheds, and a locomotive workshop. The old station building continues to be used for cultural and musical events. For cyclists, the “Auer–Fleimstalbahn–San Lugano” tour follows the well-preserved section of the former Fleimstal railway from Auer to St. Lugano.
