Punta Braccetto: Rocky Coast, Caves and History

Punta Braccetto combines a distinctive rocky coast with caves, beaches and traces of history. At the Colombara promontory, in the bays west of the town and at several cultural sites in the surrounding area, this combination can be experienced in different ways.

Rocky Coast, Promontory and Protected Nature

The rocky Colombara promontory, also known as Braccio della Colombara, extends more than 200 metres southeast into the sea. At the foot of the promontory lies the Antro di Orfeo, one of two caves. West of Punta Braccetto, in the direction of the wide beach of Randello, the coast is rocky and rugged; the numerous bays are called “Canalotti”. These different coastal formations give the landscape its distinctive character and offer you interesting subjects for walks and observation.

The area “Punta Braccetto, Contrada Cammarana” is designated as the ZSC/ZPS protected area ITA080004. Alongside the promontory and the bays, this protected-area classification represents another component of Punta Braccetto’s landscape.

Beaches and Experiences on the Water

The beach Spiaggia di Punta Braccetto is located in the immediate surroundings of Punta Braccetto. The beach Spiaggia di Torre di Mezzo is also nearby; the area also includes Spiaggia di Kamarina and Spiaggia La Lanterna. These beach destinations complement the rocky coastal landscape with further impressions of the surroundings. Together with the Canalotti bays and the rugged coast, they create a variety of coastal subjects around Punta Braccetto.

The waters around Punta Braccetto are particularly popular with people who enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving because of the numerous caves and rocks. Snorkelling and scuba diving therefore represent a focus in their own right alongside the beaches and rock formations on land.

History Around Punta Braccetto

The ruins of Torre Vigliena, also known as Torre del Brazzetto, stand on the Braccio della Colombara promontory. Baron Pietro Celestri commissioned the construction of Torre Vigliena in 1600 to defend against attacks by pirates from the African coast. The ruin thus connects the visible coastal landscape with a clearly identifiable historical background.

The Casa di Montalbano museum is located in the immediate surroundings of Punta Braccetto. The archaeological site Parco archeologico di Kaukana and the Museo di Kamarina museum are also nearby. The archaeological site of Kamarina and Spiaggia di Kamarina are also located in the area. Thus, alongside the coast, museums and archaeological sites form distinct themes in the surroundings of Punta Braccetto.

Events and Local Impressions

The 2026 summer programme of the 17th Notte Saracena scheduled its events in the area of the “Angolo del Ritrovo” information point next to Piazza dei Tramonti in Punta Braccetto. The 2026 programme also included the excursion “Punta Braccetto svelata”, a walk through the town, its stories and hidden treasures. A “Sagra della Pizza + Arancina” was scheduled for 5 September 2026 to conclude the summer programme, with mandatory registration at the information point by 2 September.

At the beach access points in Via Salina and Via del Mare in Punta Braccetto, the installation of PVC walkways, footbridges and ramps was almost complete. This specific reference to the beach access points supplements orientation on site without reducing the different landscape and experience areas to a single type of stay.
