Holiday Apartment in Caccamo – Discover the Castle, Churches and Nature
Caccamo combines impressive architectural heritage with nature trails, a lake landscape and vibrant traditions. Castello di Caccamo is one of the largest and best-preserved Norman castles in Sicily and Italy.
Castles, Churches and Historic Quarters
The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli houses a marble Madonna and Child by Antonello Gagini, as well as a silver urn containing the mortal remains of Blessed Giovanni Liccio. The Chiesa di San Benedetto alla Badia has an 18th-century majolica-tile floor attributed to Nicolò Sarzana. Vaults, emblems, angels, garlands and a ship among the waves shape its design. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata has medieval origins and was built in several construction phases.
The Duomo San Giorgio in Caccamo was founded by the Normans in 1090, restored in 1477 and extended in 1614. It houses a baptismal font created by Domenico Gagini and a ciborium canopy, a painting by Mattia Stomer, works attributed to Jan Van Houbracken, sculptures by Laurana and historic sacred furnishings. The Prades donated a baptismal font to the cathedral in 1477. San Giorgio Martire is embedded in the rock at the foot of Castello di Caccamo. The older left bell tower of the Chiesa dell’Annunziata was formed from a projecting tower of the Castello. The Chiesa dell’Oratorio is part of the Baroque monumental complex around Piazza del Duomo; the Convento di San Francesco has a 16th-century cloister. Caccamo also has a permanent exhibition on peasant civilization.
Traditions and Trails for Active Days
The annual feast of Blessed Giovanni Liccio takes place on the last Sunday in May and the following Monday. The solemn Monday procession passes through Caccamo’s main streets and oldest quarters. Outside the built-up area, the Santuario della Madonna degli Angeli bears witness to the cult of Saint James, the patron saint of paths and hikers. Terravecchia is Caccamo’s oldest quarter and adds a distinctive local history to the religious and historical themes.
The Monte San Calogero Nature Reserve, which also extends into Caccamo, encompasses holm-oak woodland and remarkable animal communities. Several nature trails pass through lush vegetation and wildlife and offer panoramic views; one of them is a trail in the Monte San Calogero Nature Reserve. Another trail runs from the Abbazia di San Nicola de’ Nemori at the foot of Monte Eurako, now called Monte San Calogero, to the summit, passing through pastures, holm-oak forests and Mediterranean maquis.
Via Francigena and Lago Rosamarina
Stage 4 of the Via Francigena leads from Caccamo to Montemaggiore Belsito across the plains of the San Leonardo and Torto rivers towards the Madonie. At kilometre 3.6, this stage passes the ruins of the Byzantine monastery of San Nicola de Nemore with its associated water spring. Lago San Leonardo in Caccamo was created after the construction of the Rosamarina dam.
Lago Rosamarina, also known as Diga or Lago di Caccamo, is associated with sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. Horse riding and mountain biking are also activities associated with it. Sight fishing is associated with the lake’s clear waters, approximately 800 metres from the dam. Caccamo also hosts the Sagra della Salsiccia di Caccamo every year.
In Caccamo, the churches and castle stand for culture-focused days, the nature trails and Monte San Calogero for hikes, and Lago Rosamarina for water-based activities. The Chiesa di San Benedetto alla Badia is open in the mornings from Tuesday to Sunday, from 09:00 to 12:30; in the afternoons, visits are possible on Mondays and/or other afternoons by prior reservation, from 14:30 to 18:30.
