Holiday apartment in Roccapalumba: Among forests, history and stars

Roccapalumba combines landscapes with traces of history, craftsmanship, religion and astronomy. The town lies at the foot of the dolomitic massif of La Rocca, in the upper valley of the Torto River and amid the surrounding forest.

Landscape and astronomical sites

A particular focus is placed on observing the sky. The Centro Studi Astronomico in Roccapalumba has a 50-centimetre Newton-Cassegrain main telescope with a two-metre focal length, a 15-centimetre refracting telescope and a three-metre helioplanetograph. In addition, the planetarium projects thousands of stars and planets visible to the naked eye onto a hemispherical dome.

The Pizzo Suaro Observatory has areas open to the public for educational exhibitions, astronomical photography exhibitions, conferences and educational events.

Historical traces around Roccapalumba

The water-powered Mulino idraulico Fiaccati mill was built in 1882 by Emanuele Avellone in Contrada Fiaccati, near Roccapalumba-Alia railway station. Water channelled from a nearby stream drives one of its two water wheels. There is no admission charge to enter the mill. Another insight into the traditional world of work can be found at the public washhouse in Contrada Pizzuta: it bears witness to one stage of traditional wool processing and consists of two adjacent masonry basins.

Christian necropolises dating from the 4th and 5th centuries were found on the rocky Castellacelo hill above the Torto River. Of the Ecclesia, a wall approximately two metres high and the beginning of an arch have survived. The masonry technique, together with pottery and roof tiles found on the surface, suggests a late antique Roman or Byzantine basilica. The Le Rocche archaeological area documents human settlement from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages without any demonstrable interruption.

Individual buildings also tell of different eras. Casale Rocche has a broad round-arched portal made of stone blocks, leading into an entrance hall connected to the courtyard. The Chiesa Madre is dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul and was opened for worship in December 1641. Above its main altar is an altarpiece created by Ilderigo Panepinto in 1844, depicting the patron saints at the Council of Jerusalem. The oldest documentary evidence of the church of Maria SS della Luce in Roccapalumba is found in a “Rivelo” of the population dating from 1682.

Festivals, pilgrimage and local specialities

Settimana Santa in Roccapalumba includes processions and public events. The Santuario della Madonna della Luce is a pilgrimage destination, particularly on its feast day on 23 August. In culinary terms, the prickly pear takes centre stage at the Opuntia Ficus-Indica festival. Tastings of prickly pears in various menus are part of the event, as is a tasting of Scuzzulata, a prickly pear liqueur.

The 26th edition of Opuntia Ficus-Indica will take place in Roccapalumba from 16 October to 18 October 2026. It celebrates the prickly pear and includes the participation of agricultural and livestock businesses, producers of typical products and local craftspeople.

When travelling by road from Palermo, take the A19 Palermo–Catania motorway to the Termini Imerese exit. Then continue via the turn-off near Caccamo and along the SS 285 towards Roccapalumba.
