Holiday apartment in Valledolmo: Churches, Festivals and Landscape

Valledolmo lies in a valley stretching from Pizzo Sampieri and Monte Campanaro to the mountain of Cammarata. In the town, historic religious buildings are combined with festivals centered on tomatoes and wine; the Magna Via Francigena also reaches Valledolmo railway station.

Churches and Historic Architecture

Baglio Castellana is also known as Palazzo Cutelli and is a historic aristocratic residence in Valledolmo dating from 1600. The residence is arranged around a square floor plan enclosing a large courtyard.

The Chiesa Madre di Valledolmo is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built in the 17th century on the initiative of Countess Cristina Cutelli Joppolo and houses a carved, gilded wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception. This motif recurs in the church in both its dedication and its imagery.

The Chiesa delle Anime Sante was completed in 1654, blessed and inaugurated by the Bishop of Cefalù. It contains mausoleums for Anna Summaniata and Antonio Cutelli.

The Chiesa di Maria SS. Della Purità is also known as Chiesa Nuova and has three aisles, designed in a Romanesque-Baroque style. It was built from 1845 onward and contains a large crucifix from the school of Civiletti.

For those interested in culture, Baglio Castellana, the Chiesa Madre, the Chiesa delle Anime Sante, the Chiesa Nuova and the Bevaio are key concrete historical reference points in Valledolmo, representing religious, courtly and rural forms.

Tomatoes, Grapes and DOC Wines

The regional cuisine is particularly evident at the Sagra del Pomodoro. It takes place from Friday to Sunday in the third week of September. In Piazza Purità, the festival includes an exhibition of various tomato varieties, tastings of various dishes with tomatoes, tomato sauce and the concentrate known as “astrattu”, as well as a traditional spaghettata to conclude.

During a visit to the Cooperativa Rinascita in Valledolmo, the entire tomato production chain is presented, from cultivation to the production of preserves; a visit includes tasting the cooperative’s products.

Wine also has a firmly established place in the annual calendar. The Sagra dell’uva and the festival of the DOC wines of the Contea di Sclafani take place on the first Sunday in October. The Valledolmo area belongs to this wine region.

Landscape and Trails

The Bevaio is named “Acqua della Signora Cristina” and is a historic and cultural landmark for Valledolmo, as well as an example of Sicilian rural architecture.

The Magna Via Francigena reaches Valledolmo railway station and then continues along the SP 8 toward Magazzinazzo and Valledolmo.
