Holiday apartment in Vulcano Piano – crater paths and island nature
Vulcano Piano between crater landscapes and island paths
Vulcano Piano combines a distinctive landscape with paths leading to special places on the island of Vulcano. The village is a large, horseshoe-shaped depression open to the northwest, at an altitude of around 330 metres. As a result, Piano does not seem like just any starting point, but rather like a landscape area in its own right, where nature observation, short discoveries and longer island experiences can be combined.
Nature at different elevations
At elevations between 350 and 400 metres above sea level, the endemic Aeolian broom grows in Piano. The rare Aeolian broom is locally called “sgubbio” and was formerly used for construction work. The Passo del Piano area also has extensive stands of rockroses. Around Piano you will also find holm oak forests, while Capo Grillo, north of Vulcano Piano, features extensive reforestation, mainly with pine and eucalyptus trees.
Paths to Capo Grillo and the crater rims
A footpath leads north from Vulcano Piano to Capo Grillo. A path also branches off from the road to Vulcano Piano and climbs up to the crater rims. These two routes offer different ways to experience the surrounding area: Capo Grillo represents a landscape with reforested areas, while the climb to the crater rims provides immediate proximity to the volcanic scenery. The Gran Cratere La Fossa was the site of Vulcano’s last historical eruption, which lasted from 1888 to 1890.
Gelso on the southern side of the island
The road from Vulcano Piano leads to the southern side of the island, where it reaches the small village of Gelso. Nearby Gelso is known for its lighthouse and beach.
Church, crater and living tradition
The Church of the Holy Guardian Angels near Capo Grillo was built in the 1930s. For more than ten years, a living nativity scene has been celebrated at the Grotte Ferlazzo. Together with the history of the Gran Cratere La Fossa, this creates a destination where nature, island history and living tradition stand side by side, without limiting a single day of your holiday to just one type of experience.
Choosing a holiday apartment in Vulcano Piano
When looking for a holiday apartment or other accommodation in Vulcano Piano, it is therefore helpful to use your own daily itinerary as a clear guide. Those who consider paths, crater landscapes and the nature around Piano particularly important can view the village as a thematic focus of their trip. For excursions in different directions, it is also useful to know that Scaffidi Bus operates year-round from Porto di Levante to Piano and Capo Grillo. This connection complements the roads and paths, making it easier to plan island experiences from more than one perspective.
