The language has cultural significance of its own: a Gallo-Italic dialect is still spoken in San Fratello today and is considered a linguistic island of great philological interest. The Museo Etno Storico Antropologico “Ermenegildo Latteri” presents the Sanfratellan ritual of Holy Week and the Festa dei Giudei. The museum also includes two residential buildings dating from the year 1000.

The Festa dei Giudei begins at dawn on Holy Wednesday and ends on Friday evening. During this time, the participants move through San Fratello, play music and take part in balancing competitions. The Mostra-Mercato del Cavallo Sanfratellano has been included in Sicily’s register of intangible cultural heritage, REIS. It is located at Passo dei Tre in San Fratello, at the Collura estate.

Forested Landscapes and Nature Experiences

The Bosco di San Fratello lies within the protected area of the Parco Naturale dei Nebrodi. A nature trail for horseback riding runs through the Bosco. Foxes, wildcats, porcupines, martens, land tortoises and various bird species find a natural habitat there. The natural area around San Fratello also includes Leccete di Zerbetto, Malo Passo and Fossa del Lupo, with approximately 250 hectares of holm oak forest.

The Cavallo Sanfratellano continues to live freely and in the wild across a forested area of more than 11,000 hectares. This area lies mainly in the Province of Messina and includes, among others, the municipalities of Acquedolci, Caronia, Militello Rosmarino, Sant'Agata Militello, Sanfratello and Mistretta.
