Leni on Salina: Nature, Culture and Rinella Beach
Accommodation in Leni
On the island of Salina, the municipality of Leni combines protected nature, religious buildings and archaeological traces as travel themes; Rinella is also home to a small, crescent-shaped beach with black sand. If you are looking for not only accommodation but also a characterful base for your trip, you can choose here between nature experiences, cultural history, the coast and local traditions.
Nature around Leni
A significant part of the landscape belongs to the Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri nature reserve. It lies within the municipalities of Leni, Malfa and Santa Marina di Salina. The protected vegetation is characterised above all by evergreen maquis as well as abundant stands of chestnut, oak, pine and holm oak. The area was established to preserve the natural vegetation and restore Mediterranean woodland vegetation. The nature reserve is home to the rare Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae), regarded as a natural symbol of the island of Salina.
The 2 km Leni–Monte Fossa trail begins at the entrance on Via Caserta, near the primary school, and leads through dense, and therefore shady, vegetation towards Monte Fossa delle Felci. The trail is moderately difficult; the ascent takes around 180 minutes and the descent around 120 minutes. A second option is the 1.8 km, also moderately difficult, Madonna del Terzito–Monte Fossa trail. It begins next to the sanctuary in Valdichiesa and leads via numerous hairpin bends and several crossings of the road to Monte Fossa delle Felci.
Churches, Sanctuaries and Early Settlement Traces
The present-day Church of San Gaetano dates from 1853. It is associated with a procession by boat held every year on 7 August. When planning your visit, please note that access to the Church of San Gaetano is only possible on request.
Another cultural and historical point of interest is the Madonna del Terzito Sanctuary in Valdichiesa, within the municipality of Leni. It was declared a sanctuary on 8 December 1969. The present-day sanctuary dates from the 17th century and stands on the ruins of older buildings. Access to this sanctuary must also be requested in advance. For families with different interests, the location therefore offers themes ranging from religious history to landscape and archaeology, without requiring you to limit your trip to just one activity.
Immediately south of Leni, Punta Megna is home to a settlement from the Early and Middle Bronze Age, dated to the 23rd to 15th centuries BC. Rinella (Leni) is also home to a Neolithic site. Together with the Castellaro site on Lipari, it is regarded as one of the oldest known human settlements in the Aeolian Islands and dates from the middle of the 6th millennium BC. These two periods offer a particularly long perspective on the island's history.
Rinella, Harbour and Local Cuisine
Rinella Beach is a small, crescent-shaped beach with black sand. It is located next to the small harbour where hydrofoils dock. If the connection between the coast and the place of arrival is important to you, Rinella is therefore one of the practical considerations when choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Leni.
Local food culture also gives the trip its own distinctive touch. The traditional Tavuliata in honour of San Giuseppe Artigiano takes place in Leni every year on 1 May. Local dishes and typical Aeolian sweets are presented. The dishes mentioned include, in particular, a minestrone made with pasta, chickpeas and various pulses. The Azienda Agricola Salvatore d’Amico is also of interest: it is one of the oldest businesses on the island of Salina, a small family-run enterprise operating within the municipality of Leni.
A holiday apartment in Leni is therefore particularly suited to travel plans in which you want to balance nature, cultural history, the coast and regional cuisine. Decide according to the focus of your days: protected vegetation and hiking trails, the historic sites in and around Leni, Rinella's beach and harbour, or local traditions.
