Sacred Sites and Local Craftsmanship

The Chiesa del Rosario dates back to the Norman period, specifically to 1163. Its exterior façade is characterised by a distinctive portico and battlements. The Monastero delle Vergini Benedettine was built in 1559. The exhibition at the Museo di Arte sacra covers approximately 350 square metres across two floors and includes several sections. Those wishing to combine historic buildings with sacred art will find several clearly distinct highlights here.

The Chiesa Maria SS. Assunta dates back to the Byzantine era and preserves the body of San Nicolò Politi in a secure shrine. The Santuario dell’Eremo di San Nicolò Politi lies approximately 2.5 kilometres from the town centre and includes the cave where Alcara’s patron saint lived until his death. The historic Motta district preserves medieval alleys reminiscent of typical Arab quarters. Local craft culture includes carpets known as “pizzare”, made from white cotton yarn and carefully cut strips of fabric in various colours.

Landscape and Nature Experiences

The landscape also changes character. Lago Maulazzo is an artificial reservoir of approximately five hectares at the north-eastern foot of Monte Soro, nestled in the Sollazzo Verde beech forest. Rocca Traora is a limestone formation rising above the inhabited area of Alcara Li Fusi. It is considered a preferred habitat of griffon vultures in Sicily.

In the Area del Grifone, griffon vultures can be observed in flight; the area also contains an aviary belonging to the reintroduction project. A guided route in this area starts at the Nebrodi Park’s Centro Escursionistico. Grotta del Lauro can be reached via a path suitable for experienced hikers and is accessible only with an accompanying guide. It contains large stalactites, stalagmites, columns and other calcareous sinter formations.

The Agrifoglio hiking trail begins in the Militello Rosmarino area at Località Fontanazze, passes through the Contrade Agrifoglio, Faitedda and Palettone, and reaches Lago Maulazzo in the territory of Alcara Li Fusi. For 2026, the Festa del Muzzuni has been announced for 24 June. During the Festa, characteristic altars are decorated with woven carpets, ears of wheat, carnations and lavender. Traditional polyphonic songs passed down orally accompany the entire festival night. From 10 p.m., music and folklore groups move through the alleys, while locals and visitors take part in the symbolic rite of comparatico.
