Church of the Holy Spirit: San Cono’s oldest sacred building

The Chiesa dello Spirito Santo is located in San Cono. It is the oldest sacred building in San Cono and was built in 1609 at the behest of Baron Andrea Trigona. On 18 May 1785, the Bishop of Syracuse, Monsignor Giovanni Battista Alagona, elevated it to a parish church and Chiesa Madre. The oldest statue of San Cono stands on the altar of the Chiesa dello Spirito Santo. The sculptor Gaspare Giudice created it in 1788 on behalf of Marquis Luigi Maria Trigona. The statue was created three years after the elevation to Chiesa Madre.

Maria SS. delle Grazie: neoclassical façade and high altar

The parish church of Maria SS. delle Grazie was built in 1868 according to a design by the architect Lo Piano from Caltanissetta. Its façade is designed in the neoclassical style. In the presbytery, the church houses a polychrome marble high altar dating from 1868. The high altar therefore dates from the same year as the construction of this church. The two churches were built in different centuries.

Chiesa del Crocifisso on Monte San Marco

The Chiesa del Crocifisso is located north of San Cono on the slopes of Monte San Marco. The central altar is dominated by a large papier-mâché crucifix. The church building thus combines a specific location on Monte San Marco with a distinctive furnishing detail.
