Acireale between culture, lava and tradition

Acireale combines cultural discoveries with nature experiences and vibrant traditions. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Acireale, you will find a destination whose highlights can be easily organised according to your interests: historic squares and collections, landscape experiences, granita-making or a colourful carnival.

Baroque squares and art

The historic centre of Acireale lies in a Baroque setting between the cathedral, the duomo and Corso Umberto. Piazza del Duomo is an authentic open-air museum thanks to the monuments surrounding it. For days devoted to culture, it offers distinctive points of reference without requiring you to commit to a single sightseeing theme.

The Basilica Collegiata di San Sebastiano is designated as a national monument and contains frescoes by Pietro Paolo Vasta created between 1732 and 1736. This building brings together protected monument status and 18th-century painting.

The Zelantea Library in Acireale was founded in 1671 and preserves around 100,000 books. These include an historic collection of 56,000 volumes and more than 1,000 manuscripts. The adjoining art gallery displays works attributed to the schools of Rubens, Titian and Pietro Novelli. Access to the Biblioteca Comunale Zelantea is made easier by ramps and lifts.

The Church of Santa Maria della Neve houses Acireale’s 18th-century nativity scene in a natural lava-flow cave. It comprises 34 life-size figures made of wax and wood.

La Timpa and the Chiazzette path

The La Timpa nature reserve covers 265 hectares and lies entirely within the municipality of Acireale. La Timpa is a natural escarpment created by movements along the Acireale fault, exposing lava layers around 200,000 years old. This makes the area’s geological character particularly vivid.

The Chiazzette path leads from the Acireale plateau down to the coast through seven hairpin bends, overcoming a difference in elevation of 150 metres. The route combines a clearly defined change in elevation with an independent nature and physical-activity theme.

Granita, craftsmanship and carnival

Nivarata was established in Acireale in 2012 as a territorial marketing project. The Nivarata Experience includes excursions to Mount Etna’s snow pits, as well as demonstrations and the traditional artisanal preparation of granita.

During the Acireale Carnival, allegorical grotesque floats, flower floats and masked groups parade through the streets of the town centre.

When choosing your holiday apartment in Acireale, you can use your preferred daily rhythm as a starting point. Those interested in culture can focus their plans on historic squares, the basilica, library and art gallery; nature and activity days on La Timpa and the Chiazzette path. The Nivarata Experience represents excursions, demonstrations and granita-making, while the carnival provides its own festive focus. If you are travelling with children of different ages, you can weigh up culture, nature and events and choose your accommodation according to which location suits your personal priorities.
