Between castle ruins and a rock church

The historical character is particularly evident at Castello Santapau. Its ruins stand on a calcarenite elevation and overlook the historic centre of Licodia Eubea. The origins of the Castello are generally traced back to the Byzantine period. The earthquake of 11 January 1693 destroyed the complex; it was never rebuilt. The local history here brings together the former fortification and the upheaval caused by the earthquake. The contrast between the former fortress and its present-day ruined form gives the site a distinctive historical character.

The Grotta dei Santi complex presents a different picture; it is a rock complex within the municipality of Licodia Eubea. It is located on Poggio dei Santi hill in Contrada Alia, southeast of Licodia Eubea. The final cave was converted into a single-room church and features clearly visible frescoes. These include a depiction of the Crucifixion dated to the 11th or 12th century. The rock complex thus combines its location southeast of Licodia Eubea with a church interior and frescoes.

Palazzo Mugnos and the town's architectural history

Palazzo Mugnos also adds to the historical profile. The main façade on Via Mugnos has high artistic value because of its friezes and is classified as late Baroque and Rococo. No verified construction date has been documented for Palazzo Mugnos; the complex is generally dated to the 17th to 18th century. After the 1693 earthquake, the palazzo was extensively consolidated. The friezes draw attention to the façade; the consolidation forms part of the building's history after the earthquake.

Festivals between faith and regional culinary delights

The Festa Santa Margherita is Licodia Eubea's patronal festival and takes place on 20 July in memory of the saint's martyrdom. On the feast day, the celebrations culminate in a solemn procession with the relic and a 16th-century statue of Santa Margherita. The July programme also includes the first display of the relic, the saint's skull, as well as the pilgrimage to the votive chapel dedicated to Santa Margherita in Contrada Masera, which is associated with a legend.

The Festa dell'Uva adds a culinary accent: table grapes and local products are sampled at the festival. The Museo Civico “A. Di Vita” also offers educational activities, meetings and initiatives promoting archaeology and local history.
