The Chiesa Maria SS. Immacolata (Chiesa Vecchia) was blessed on 8 June 1815, opened for worship and recognised as a public church in the same year. The earthquake of 18 June 1879 almost completely destroyed it. During the reconstruction, it was rebuilt with the same proportions as before, but in a simpler style.

The Chiesa Maria SS. del Lume also tells the story of a lengthy construction process: reconstruction began in 1921. On 19 March 1922, the church, which was still being rebuilt, was designated as the main church of Linera. It was consecrated and opened for worship in 1934, although it was still unfinished at that time.

The first church built in the area dates back to the 16th century and was dedicated to Maria Vergine della Catena. The present parish church of Maria Vergine preserves the marble elements of the altar from this earlier church. It also contains a valuable Baroque-style pallium that was already present in the old chapel. Maria SS. del Lume is celebrated in Linera on the third Sunday in November.

Natural areas and distinctive traces of the past

The name Linera derives from extensive areas where flax was once cultivated. The settlement history also goes back a long way: finds of gold and silver coins from graves indicate that the area was already inhabited during the Roman Republic.

The natural area includes Bosco di Linera, which was designated as a special protection area and a site of community importance by the decree of 3 April 2000. Cosentini is practically incorporated into the area of Linera and includes the almost 5-hectare Parco Oasi Naturalistico. Its land was formerly used as a hunting ground.
