Pedara opens up a journey between volcanic landscapes, rural traces, festivals and culture. When you spend your holiday in Pedara, you can organise your days around specific themes: hiking routes in Parco dell’Etna, regional products, Sicilian granita or discoveries in the surrounding area.
Lava stone, chestnut forest and volcanic traces
A special landscape feature is the Rifugio Salto del Cane. It is a traditional rural building made of lava stone with three rooms. Near the refuge, the lava slabs dating from 1634/38 extend to the edge of the chestnut forest. They lie along a track originally marked by shepherds. When looking at the lava slabs, the date 1634/38 provides a specific chronological reference for this landscape.
Hikes and trails for active holiday days
The Rifugio Salto del Cane and its surrounding area form Punto Base No. 21 for hikes in Parco dell’Etna. The 766-766A circular route reaches the “Bottoniera” of Salto del Cane, with three outlets of volcanic material from Roman times arranged in a line. The Sentiero delle Ginestre also offers a specific natural reference: its first stage reaches Tarderia, a rural hamlet of Pedara. A cycle and footpath was also inaugurated in Parco D’Arrigo in Pedara. The Rifugio Salto del Cane is available by reservation through UST CT. For active days, the circular route to the volcanic outlets, the stage to Tarderia and the cycle and footpath in Parco D’Arrigo can be planned as three different destinations associated with Pedara.
Festivals, granita and regional products
The annual Festa dell’Annunziata is a late-summer celebration associated with the Marian devotion of the local community and the Santuario di Maria SS. Annunziata. The 2024 Festa della Granita took place in Piazza Don Bosco and in the Parco Comunale “Angelo D’Arrigo”. In Pedara, the Festa della Granita Artigianale Siciliana 2024 was held as the sixth edition. For 2026, the municipal Festa del Contadino scheduled the sale of typical Sicilian products from the region at the “Acqua del Parrino” location on every Sunday from 12 July to 30 August.
