The Riserva Naturale Foce del fiume Belice e dune limitrofe nature reserve stretches for approximately 5 km between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo di Menfi. The Solette coast features low sandy coves and submerged rocks; meadows of Mediterranean aquatic plants promote biodiversity there. Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) occasionally lay their eggs on Capparrina di Mare beach. Giache Bianche beach near Bertolino di Mare is characterised along the shoreline by white pebbles and a small pine grove. Non-motorised means of transport such as bicycles and electric vehicles are permitted on the Pista Ciclabile di Menfi.

Wine and regional specialities

The entire administrative area of the municipality of Menfi belongs to the geographically defined production area of DOC Menfi. This includes the wine types Bianco, Rosso, Rosato, Spumante bianco and Spumante rosato. Variants such as Vendemmia tardiva, Passito, Superiore and Riserva are also provided for Bianco and Rosso. At Cantine Barbera, visitors can observe the grape harvest or various stages of wine production. Palazzo Planeta houses the Enoteca della Strada del Vino delle Terre Sicane, as well as cultural activities promoting wine and local specialities.

Historic sites in Menfi

Palazzo Pignatelli in Menfi was built in 1638 and occupies the site of the former castle of Frederick II of Sicily. The building has two floors with a total of twelve vaulted rooms. A necropolis dating from between 330 and 400 AD was discovered beneath the palazzo; sixteen graves set into the ground and lined and covered with limestone slabs were uncovered. Castello di Burgimilluso was built in the area of present-day Menfi, where Frederick II of Sicily ordered the construction of a settlement in 1238.

Other historic buildings include the Chiesa Madre with a wooden 17th-century crucifix covered with silver foil, the Chiesa di San Giuseppe, built in 1715, the neoclassical Palazzo Ravidà, made of sandstone in the last quarter of the 18th century, and the Chiesa del Collegio di Maria SS. Annunziata, built at the beginning of the 19th century. The Chiesa del Purgatorio was built between 1739 and 1769. It was initially dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot and has been dedicated to the Madonna della Consolazione since 1947; it is also known as the Chiesa del Purgatorio.

Festivals and living traditions

The festival of Sant'Antonio di Padova in Menfi takes place every year on 13 June. The highlight is a religious procession through the historic centre. The festival also includes traditional games, performances and tastings of local products, including wines from Menfi's wineries. Inycon is a recurring event in Menfi dedicated to wine, food and Mediterranean culture.
