Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Ossi can plan a trip around archaeological features, Nuraghi, museums and contemporary art. Hearths, spiral motifs, red ochre and a visible central tower give each discovery its own distinctive character.
Discover hypogea with distinctive features
Tomb II in the Mesu e’ Montes necropolis contains a hearth carved into the centre of the floor of the main chamber. The Noeddale necropolis consists of six hypogea; three Domus de Janas display architectural features typical of houses. The Tomba della Casa comprises 11 chambers and represents a rectangular hut, a less familiar form compared with circular examples.
The Tomba delle Spirali in the Noeddale necropolis preserves two pillars carved out of the rock in its main chamber and combines horn-shaped motifs with double-spiral motifs. The S’Adde ‘e Asile necropolis lies at the foot of Monte Corona ‘e Teula and comprises 11 Domus de Janas as well as two excavation areas. There, the Tomba delle Clessidre is a multi-chambered hypogeum facing southeast, with a 3.5-metre-long dromos. The Tomba Maggiore comprises 21 chambers and is inaccessible because it has collapsed.
Littos Longos and the paths to the archaeological sites
The Domus de Janas of Littos Longos has an approximately nine-metre-long trapezoidal dromos, depictions of bull horns and traces of red ochre. The dromos refers to the entrance to the hypogeum. The Domus de Janas of Littos Longos can be reached via a downhill footpath; after about 60 metres, the hypogeum is visible on the left. The route to the S’Adde ‘e Asile necropolis initially follows an unpaved road, after which you continue on foot to the archaeological site.
Nuraghi and insights into past ways of life
The Nuragic village of Sa Mandra ‘e sa Giua in the Litterai district of Ossi comprises a settlement of huts surrounding a Nuraghe with a visible central tower. This central tower was built between 1400 and 1300 BC; two smaller towers were constructed alongside it. Sa Mandra ‘e sa Giua also contains the circular “Casa del pane”, with seating, rectangular basins and an adjoining oven.
Baronial palace and contemporary art
The Palazzo baronale of Ossi dates from the 17th century, has housed the ethnographic museum since 2007 and offers an exhibition route across three floors. The ethnographic museum in the Palazzo baronale displays tools used in agriculture and in the production of cheese, wine and olive oil. In this way, the Palazzo complements the archaeological sites with a tangible insight into craft and farming activities.
Parco di Molineddu has two arenas used for concerts and other cultural events. The park covers approximately three hectares and forms an open-air gallery of contemporary art surrounded by nature. When choosing your holiday apartment in Ossi, you can therefore consider whether you want to focus your days on hypogea and Nuraghi, the ethnographic museum, or art and cultural events.
