Culture and history in Alghero

The historic centre of Alghero is a labyrinth of narrow streets leading to lively squares. Its yellow walls and old houses recall the city’s Catalan origins. The main tower of the nuraghe dates from 1600 BC and fully preserves its chamber with the characteristic false dome vault. The archaeological site comprises the remains of a complex nuraghe, originally consisting of three towers, as well as a village. A pentagonal wall surrounds the nuraghe and separates it from the village huts.

Coast, dunes and clear water

The coast of Alghero, the Riviera del Corallo, is approximately 90 kilometres long. Much of the coast is protected by the Capo Caccia–Isola Piana marine area. At Maria Pia, just outside Alghero’s built-up area, there are sand dunes covered by centuries-old juniper trees. Le Bombarde Beach has transparent water and a clear, sandy seabed.

Planning your visit to the Grotta di Nettuno

The Grotta di Nettuno offers two different ways of accessing it: it can be reached via the Escala del Cabirol, a staircase with 654 steps. By sea, the grotto can be reached by boats departing daily from Alghero’s marina or from the Cala Dragunara pier in Porto Conte. Entry is permitted only when weather and sea conditions allow it.
