Nureci: Nuraghi, Fossils and Granite Landscape

Nureci brings together archaeological heritage, an impressive landscape and everyday Sardinian culture within a compact area. This creates a destination that offers more than just individual attractions: among nuraghi, fossils, historic buildings, granite formations and regional cuisine, the character of Alta Marmilla can be discovered in many different ways.

Landscape of Valleys, Granite and Fossils

Nureci lies on the slopes of Monte Maiore and is surrounded by broad valleys, springs, rocky walls and distinctive granite formations. The landscape combines the rolling marl valleys typical of Marmilla with the granite massif of Monte Majore, whose appearance is defined by rocky peaks and sheer walls. Mount Monte Maiori is also located in the vicinity of Nureci. It offers interested visitors different geological perspectives on the region.

At Genna Manna – Muru ‘e Cubeddu, marine sedimentary rocks from the Miocene emerge around 1 km west of Nureci. The Banco a Turritelle fossil bed near Muru Cubeddu is an organogenic deposit rich in shells, characterised by numerous mollusc species and a very high number of individuals. Muru Cubeddu is also considered an important geosite documenting geological and palaeontological events in Sarcidano and Marmilla. The nearby mountains include Bruncu Mannu, Cuccuru Mandareddu and Bruncu Soidustru.

Nuraghi and Archaeological Traces

The Nuragic heritage is one of the defining themes of Nureci: the town’s archaeological heritage includes 21 documented sites. Nuraghe Giuerri Mannu is one of the important nuraghi of Nureci; a foot from a pre-Nuragic tripod was found there. Nuraghe Attori is also one of the important nuraghi of Nureci and lies on the border with the municipality of Genoni.

The historic sites of Nuraghe Sirigoni, Nuraghe Fruscu and Nuraghe Senis Mannu are located in the vicinity of Nureci. The historic site of Nuraghe sa Cirra is also in the area around Nureci. The ruins of the ancient villa stand beside the rural church of Madonna d’Itria. These places offer different ways of exploring the older history of the Sardinian landscape, without restricting Nureci to a single era.

Historic Centre and Local Culture

Buildings from the early 19th century have been preserved in Nureci’s historic centre, including the baronial palace of the Touffani family. The paved streets and squares are decorated with fountains and murals. The 17th-century church of Santa Barbara forms the centrepiece of the historic centre.

The Centro di Interpretazione Paleontologico e del Paesaggio, or CIPP for short, is also located in the historic centre. It houses a fossil collection from the municipal area. The CIPP features the Is Prinzipales exhibition with terracotta figures depicting the everyday life of farmers. Numerous portals in Nureci are characteristic of the architecture of Sardinian Campidanese courtyard houses and add another architectural detail to the townscape.

Cuisine and a Dated Event Notice

Nureci’s cuisine follows the culinary traditions of Alta Marmilla and uses typical products from the area. Its roots lie in the agropastoral culture. On 14 August 2026, a concert by the Treves Blues Band with Paolo Bonfanti and Maurizio Gnola was scheduled at the Arena Mamma Blues in Nureci as part of the Dromos Festival programme, under the title Italian Blues Night.
