Arborea combines a bright sandy coast with natural areas, a cycle path and the history of the town.

Coast, protected areas and nature by the water

Spiaggia di Arborea has a very long stretch of coastline with bright sand. Immediately behind the sand lies a monumental pine forest. The direct transition from the open coast to the woodland characterizes this area as a succession of beach and forest.

Stagno di S'Ena Arrubia, in the municipality of Arborea, is designated as a nature reserve and a special protection area. In the S'Ena Arrubia natural area, Agenzia Forestas welcomes visitors and organizes visits there, as well as a guided tour of the exhibition route. Another large landscape area is Stagno di Corru s’Ittiri. It covers an area of 5,699 hectares in the municipalities of Arborea, Terralba, Arbus and Guspini. This landscape area therefore extends beyond the municipality of Arborea.

Archaeology by the water

The archaeological area of Orri is located in the municipality of Arborea on the shore of a small body of water enclosed by a tombolo. From there, the view extends across the waters of the southern Gulf of Oristano. The area contains a nuragic well temple.

Architecture and history at the MUBA

Piazza Maria Ausiliatrice has gardens, and the historic houses of Arborea are designed in the Liberty and Neo-Gothic styles. The MUBA, Museo comunale della Bonifica di Arborea, is housed in the former mill, is considered an example of industrial archaeology, and collects, displays and interprets materials and documents relating to the history of the land reclamation of the Arborea area. The rooms of the former mill thus connect the historic site with the materials and documents relating to the land reclamation.

For those interested in culture, several themes come together closely at the MUBA: the land reclamation, the creation of the town of Arborea, its designers and its architecture. The historical section uses large explanatory panels and multimedia offerings for this purpose. For visitors exploring the architecture, the MUBA offers audio guides in four languages. The new exhibition route also presents the grave goods from the necropolis of S’Ungroni.

Cycle path and local festivals

The Arborea cycle path crosses the entire municipality and is therefore not spatially limited to a single section. At the 37th edition of the Sagra della Polenta in Arborea, various polenta dishes were offered in 2019, including polenta with tocio, Radicchio di Treviso and pancetta, as well as with luganega. The Sagra delle fragole in Arborea had already been held for more than three decades. Visitors could taste fresh strawberries there in various ways, especially with cream.

Other places: Bonarcado, Ales, Masullas, Bosa Marina, Bauladu, Sa Rocca Tunda, Abbasanta and Solarussa.
