Holiday apartment in Monteponi: Mining history and hiking trails
Accommodation in Monteponi
Discover Monteponi: Villa and mining history
If you choose a holiday apartment in Monteponi for a vacation combining culture and outdoor activities, mining history and hiking come together here: Villa Bellavista, the Monteponi Mine, and several points along the routes give the place a distinctive character. This allows you to plan your trip around architecture and technology as well as a hiking stage with Monteponi as the starting point or an intermediate stop.
Villa Bellavista and Palazzo Bellavista
Villa Bellavista has a U-shaped floor plan with three above-ground floors and a basement. Behind the villa is a garden with panoramic paths offering views of the surrounding area and the mining village of Monteponi. After years of vacancy following the end of mining activities, Palazzo Bellavista was restored and returned to the public; today, it is a branch of the University of Cagliari.
Technical traces of the mine
The drainage system of the Monteponi Mine included an original drainage gallery almost six kilometres long, running from Pozzo Vittorio to Fontanamare Beach. The Monteponi Mine competed with the contemporary Montevecchio Mine for the leading position among the mining producers of the young Kingdom of Italy. A private railway connected the extraction facilities with a port facility near Portoscuso, which was dedicated to President Baudi di Vesme and named Porto Vesme.
The Galleria Villamarina was excavated in 1852 at 174 metres above sea level and connected the two main shafts, Pozzo Sella and Pozzo Vittorio Emanuele. Pozzo Sella was built between 1872 and 1874 to drain the water that hindered mineral extraction. Its exterior structure was later used for the mine’s technical facilities, including a mechanical workshop, forges, and a carpentry workshop.
Hiking with Monteponi as a stage point
Hiking trail D-313 starts in Monteponi and leads to Nebida, with a stop at Monte Scorra along the way. The first stage of the Santa Barbara Mining Trail reaches the Piazzetta di Monteponi, where the church dedicated to Saint Barbara is located. From the Palazzina Bellavista, this stage continues along an unpaved track. When choosing a holiday apartment in Monteponi, you can therefore decide whether architecture and mining or hiking stages should be the focus of your trip.
Holiday apartment in Monteponi: Information for your stay
The Monteponi Mine is accessible via Via Cattaneo at the end of the built-up area of Iglesias along the SS 126. A guided tour of the Galleria Villamarina lasts approximately 50 minutes and takes place at ground level on relatively even unpaved terrain. Tours of the Foresteria di Monteponi are available exclusively by prior reservation and are managed by Cissa. The approximately 50-minute tour therefore represents a separate time block in the daily schedule. When planning, you can take into account the ground-level tour and the unpaved track of the stage as different types of terrain.
