Domusnovas combines archaeology, churches, caves and climbing. The Nuraghe di Sa Domu’e s’Orcu is a complex nuraghe with nine towers, including the main tower. The Chiesa di Santa Barbara di Domusnovas was built towards the end of the 13th century. The Sa Dom’e S’Orcu archaeological site can be visited by prior reservation. Prior reservation is therefore part of the practical planning for a visit to this site. For those interested in culture, the churches of Domusnovas are also specific destinations alongside the nuraghe site.

Grotta San Giovanni and churches

The Grotta di San Giovanni is located in the municipality of Domusnovas, a few kilometres from the town centre and therefore in the immediate vicinity of the town. It is a 850-metre-long natural gallery through which a lit road runs. The length of 850 metres provides a clear spatial framework for planning a day trip to the cave. Near the southern entrance is the Chiesa di San Giovanni, a rural church.

Local traditions also reflect the connection between the town and the cave. The traditional procession in honour of San Giovanni Battista takes place by torchlight and leads to the church of San Giovanni Battista at the cave of the same name. In Domusnovas, Sant’Ignazio is celebrated every year on 11 May with a procession through the town. The two processions involve different settings: the church at the cave and the town itself.

Climbing areas around Domusnovas

When climbing in Domusnovas, you can choose from more than 20 climbing crags and over 550 climbing routes. Some climbing crags near Domusnovas can be reached from the town centre in a short time. When planning a day on site, the wide choice of routes and the individual crags near the town centre can be considered as two different aspects. The large number of routes makes choosing a specific crag a natural planning step for a day of climbing.
