Isili combines prehistoric heritage, churches, water and cliffs to create a destination with many different travel interests. If you are planning a holiday apartment in Isili, you can shape your days around culture, activity and landscape. Nuraghe Is Paras, Lago San Sebastiano and the cliffs along the Rio Corrigas represent this range.
Landscape and prehistoric heritage
Isili lies in a landscape of fertile valleys and gentle, cultivated hills. The Monte Simudis municipal forest park contains a wooded area crossed by several paths. Nuraghe Is Paras stands on a small marl elevation at an altitude of 505 m, directly on the northern edge of Isili. The SS.128 runs through Isili.
Archaeology with unusual details
Isili is one of the most important centres of prehistoric anthropomorphic statue production in Sardinia. To date, 51 menhir statues from the Beaker culture have been recovered in the Isili area; they date from 2,100 to 1,900 BC. Isili’s prehistoric heritage includes seven Domus de Janas; their architecture points to a Late Neolithic horizon of the Ozieri culture between 3,200 and 2,850 BC. At Nuraghe Is Paras, the settlement phases began in the Late Bronze Age (1,330–1,150 BC) and continued through the Final Bronze Age into the Early Iron Age (1,150–900 BC). Its central chamber is 12 metres high.
The Domus de Janas Is Tanas ‘e Mrexani near the Isili belvedere comprise two adjacent burials, one single-chambered and the other two-chambered. The parish church of San Saturnino was built in the 14th century and later modified in the Gothic-Aragonese style. Its marble high altar dates from 1780.
Water, cliffs and paths
At Lago San Sebastiano, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, dragon boat and sport fishing are possible. The Church of San Sebastiano stands on a limestone spur that became an island after the construction of the Is Borrocus artificial dam. For climbers, the cliffs along the Rio Corrigas known as “Le falesie” offer more than 300 climbing routes of varying difficulty.
The canal visible today along the Rio Corrigas can be explored on foot; complex sedimentary structures can be seen in the rocks. The disused railway line from the Sarcidano station towards Villacidro can be used for walking and mountain biking. In the reconstructed craft workshop of the Maraté Museum, demonstrations by a coppersmith can take place on request.
