The Church of San Giovanni Battista is located in the historic centre of Assemini, not far from the parish church of San Pietro. Two Greek inscriptions have been preserved in San Giovanni Battista. The church’s floor plan has the shape of a Greek cross inscribed in a square; a dome rises at the intersection of the arms of the cross. San Pietro is an example of Gothic-Catalan architecture from the second half of the 16th century. The square bell tower of San Pietro is one of the tallest in Sardinia. The Church of San Cristoforo dates from the 17th century.

In Assemini’s historic centre stand typical Campidano houses made of mud-and-straw bricks, known as ladiri, with round-arched portals. Casa dei Centenari is a Campidano house built in the mid-19th century. The Old Town Hall was built at the end of the 18th century in the neoclassical style and is considered a venue for exhibitions by local artists and of models. The Bruno Atzeni Ethnographic Museum displays Sardinian antiques for domestic use in a workshop designed as a house museum.

The first evidence of craft activity dating from the period of Punic rule in Sardinia was found in the Sant’Andrea area.

Ceramics, panadas and local flavours

Ceramic-making techniques are presented at Assemini’s craft exhibition market. In addition to the products, the market also focuses on the methods used to make them.

Panadas from Assemini are filled pastries made with lamb or eel and potatoes. Potatoes are part of the filling in both recipe variations, while lamb and eel distinguish the two versions. At the Sagra della Panada in Assemini, panadas made according to the town’s traditional recipe are offered and sampled at various stalls.

Woodland, salt works and birdwatching

The area around Assemini extends into the Gutturu Mannu oasis, a wooded area of around 35,000 hectares. The Monte Arcosu Wildlife Protection Oasis is part of Gutturu Mannu Regional Park. Villa Asquer Park is home to 2,100 palms from different parts of the world.

In the surroundings of Assemini, the Santa Gilla lagoon is a destination for birdwatching and a habitat for around 200 bird species, including greater flamingos. The Conti Vecchi salt works offers a two-hour visit that includes the historic buildings and a one-hour guided train ride through the salt works and its nature oasis. The salt works therefore provides a clearly defined stop between the historic buildings and the journey through the nature oasis.
