A holiday apartment in Domus de Maria takes you into a landscape where archaeological history, protected coastline, wooded mountains and local culinary culture stand closely side by side. Bithia, Torre di Chia, Secca di Bithia and Su Giudeu Beach offer different ways to spend your holiday days.
Bithia and the History of the Headland
The archaeological site of Bithia lies above and at the foot of the Torre di Chia headland. The settlement was founded around 720 BC. East of the acropolis and near the mouth of the river port, the sacred tofet is located on the islet of Su Cardolinu. It was established in the final years of the 7th century BC.
Those interested in culture will encounter ancient traces in Bithia here, as well as the considerably more recent coastal history of Torre di Chia.
Torre di Chia between Coastal History and the Ascent
Torre di Chia is part of a complex of Spanish coastal towers dating from the 17th century. It was built in 1578 at the initiative of Viceroy De Moncada; its task was to defend the mouth of the Rio di Chia. Daily opening of Torre di Chia to the public was planned from 1 August 2026. The ascent to the Torre di Chia headland is recommended only for people in good physical condition.
Marine Protected Area, Beach and Wildlife
The Capo Spartivento Marine Protected Area covers more than 3,700 hectares of sea and 10 kilometres of protected coastline. Su Giudeu is a beach in Domus de Maria. The coastal landscape is complemented by a forest area that serves as a wildlife haven for Sardinian deer and fallow deer.
On Foot in the Mountains and Underwater
Excursions on foot are possible in the wooded mountain areas of Domus de Maria. Those planning a more active holiday will find another focus in Secca di Bithia: within the marine protected area, it is designated as a diving route or dive site. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether your personal focus is more on walks in the mountain areas, at Su Giudeu Beach or on maritime topics relating to Secca di Bithia.
