Vistrorio Between Local History and Mountain Landscapes

Vistrorio lies in the central and lower part of the moraine basin of the Valle del Chy, the former name for the lower Val Chiusella. Rising above the town is the mountain profile known as “La Bella Dormiente”, which is clearly visible as far as Ivrea.

Art, Architecture and Historical Traces

The Church of San Bartolomeo dates back to the 14th century. Adjoining it is a Romanesque bell tower with clearly visible biforate windows of historical and artistic interest. The church can be reached via Via Massimo d’Azeglio; from the street, access is via three steps. Another notable religious building is the Chapel of San Rocco, built in 1762.

The Vistrorio Open-Air Museum displays more than 50 works created as part of the “Pietra Legno e Ferro” event. It extends through Vistrorio’s central streets and across Piazza Cavour. Admission to the open-air museum is free. Narrow, winding lanes lined with distinctive farmhouses and mansions also shape the townscape; the roofs are covered with red tiles.

The history of the Valchiusella area is also connected with Vistrorio: in February 1387, a peace agreement was concluded in the town’s public square, bringing the area under the rule of the House of Savoy. The agreement was drawn up in the presence and with the consent of the population.

Trails Along the Chiusella and Stages for Active Days

San Rocco can be reached via a path through meadows before reaching the bank of the Torrente Chiusella. The ancient stone bridge can also be reached by a path through the greenery. It is located near the Torrente Chiusella and may be of Roman origin.

For the Oropa–Belmonte pilgrimage route, a pilgrim stamp is available in the portico of the town hall at Piazza Cavour 1. On the Valchiusella Trail, the Vistrorio–Brosso section forms part of the Alta Via dell’Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea. The third stage of the Valchiusella Trail reaches Vistrorio at the Alta Via AMI in Regione Luvera. Public transport access to this third stage is provided by GTT line 512 between Ivrea, Castellamonte and Valchiusella.

Water, Wine and Pre-Industrial Traces

The Lago Gurzia, also known as Lago di Vidracco or Lago di Vistrorio, is located near Vistrorio. There is an Ecomuseum of Water, several trails and small equipped areas that provide a pedestrian connection to hiking routes within the protected area. The ruins of pre-industrial enterprises also remain as evidence of Vistrorio’s historic economy shaped by water.

Wine production in Vistrorio is now regarded as “heroic viticulture” and is an amateur activity. The mountain profile, the Torrente Chiusella, the lake and the historic buildings are therefore all located in the surroundings of Vistrorio.
