Villar San Costanzo invites visitors to enjoy a stay that combines striking natural formations, Romanesque architecture and religious traditions. A defining destination is the Riserva Naturale dei Ciciu del Villar. It was established by the Piedmont Region in 1989, is located in the municipality of Villar San Costanzo, in the Costa Pragamonti area of Val Maira, covers elevations from 670 to 1,350 metres and extends over 64 hectares.

Ciciu Rocks and Nature Experiences

The Ciciu rock formations are large mushroom-shaped rocks with an earth stem and a cap made from a block of hard gneiss. Their unusual shape makes the natural setting an illustrative subject for anyone who wants not only to observe the landscape but also to understand it. Ciciuvagando is an approximately 45-minute tourist and educational circular trail through the Riserva Naturale dei Ciciu del Villar. Information boards explain how the Ciciu were formed, as well as stories and legends and the flora observed along the trail.

The reserve also offers an easy walk of approximately 30 minutes featuring carved wooden animals representing typical local occupations. Important for orientation on site: climbing the Ciciu rock formations is prohibited.

Romanesque Spaces and Sacred History

San Costanzo al Monte is an architectural highlight. The Romanesque apse area and the octagonal tiburium are the most artistically interesting part of the San Costanzo al Monte complex. According to tradition, the relics of the holy martyr are said to have been kept in the Romanesque crypt. From April to October, San Costanzo al Monte is open to visitors on the second Sunday of the month from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; for groups of at least six adults, the visit is accompanied by the Volontari per l’Arte.

Further insights into the local history are offered by the Parrocchia di San Pietro in Vincoli Ex-abazia di Villar San Costanzo: The building is Romanesque, has a Gothic bell tower and a Baroque façade. At the Parco Archeologico Cannetum, visitors can see an Iron Age hut, a Lombard hut and the Castrum. The Cappella di San Giorgio dates from the 15th century. As a religious attraction, the Santuario di Santa Maria Delibera is a frequently visited pilgrimage site for worshippers who venerate the Madonna.

Active Days, Crafts and Trails

There are also concrete options for active holiday days. Bouldering is practised on rocks and rock formations on the edge of the Riserva Naturale dei Ciciu del Villar. L' Arc runs workshops on building and using historical bows, bronze casting, early medieval goldsmithing, blacksmithing and woodworking. In this way, hands-on crafts complement the area's nature and cultural experiences.

The first stage of the Percorsi Occitani leads from Villar San Costanzo to Sant’Anna di Roccabruna. Santa Maria di Villar San Costanzo is a starting point for easy walks along unpaved paths on the slopes of Monte San Bernardo. Villar San Costanzo is also an excellent starting point for discovering Alta Valle Maira.

A regular date for visitors interested in culture and traditions is the patronal festival of Saints Vittore and Costanzo on 12 September. It includes a religious procession accompanied by mounted Roman soldiers in historical costumes.
