Holiday apartment in Torresina: discover nature and history
Torresina lies amid the hills of Alta Langa, on the crest of a rise. Those who choose a holiday apartment in Torresina find a place where landscape, paths and history stand closely side by side. The Roman stele is considered the oldest surviving evidence of human presence in the Torresina area. A stele of Roman origin was found in 1999 near the Cappella dell’Assunta. The Roman stele was restored by the Museo di Antichità di Torino; it was examined by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Piemonte and by Professor Giovanni Mennella of the University of Genoa.
The religious buildings also tell the story of Torresina’s past. The Cappella Santa Croce was built in 1844 out of gratitude for the end of a long famine. The Parrocchia di San Giorgio is Torresina’s parish church, dedicated to Saint George, and dates back to the 16th century. Its façade is made of Langa stone and features two orders of pilasters, a tripartite Serliana window and a triangular pediment. On 16 April 1796, the municipal territory was the scene of a bloody battle between Piedmontese troops and the French army under General Napoleon, which sought to capture the Colle della Pedaggera.
Marked paths and distinctive landscapes
For walks and hikes, the Sentiero Storia offers a practical starting point: it begins at the Pietra dell’Appuntamento on the SP352 in the municipality of Torresina and is marked with blue trail signs. The Sentiero Cusina follows the valley of the Cusina stream through woodland and offers views of the Alps. At the same time, it passes marl formations and striking badlands that are typical of Alta Langa.
The Sentiero Cultura is a circular route of approximately 9.290 kilometres that begins at the Pietra dell’Appuntamento in Torresina and takes about three hours on foot. Along the way, it passes the place where Piedmontese troops had entrenched themselves during the battle of 16 April 1796; traces of the trenches are still preserved there. In spring, rare protected wild orchids can be seen along the path. The different route lengths and the stated walking time help you adapt your day planning to your preferred focus.
An unusual destination is the Fontana Canaretta. It is an old village water reservoir in a natural tuff cave; the water shows green-blue reflections of light. The name “Appuntamento nei Boschi” is associated with a five-day open-air event held between the last Sunday in July and the first Sunday in August.
Nature observation and destinations in the surrounding region
On the Deserta Langarum route between Igliano and Torresina, you can observe roe deer, foxes, wild boar, badgers, squirrels and numerous bird species. The route runs over the ridges on both sides of the Cusina Valley and continues to the streambed. The landscape is therefore particularly suited to you if nature observation and varied paths are among your travel interests.
In the immediate vicinity of Torresina is the Museo Della Ceramica Di Mondovi', a museum. In the wider surrounding region are the Castello di Roccavignale, considered a ruin, the Palazzo Fauzone, a palace, the Castello di Murialdo, also considered a ruin, and the Giardini del Belvedere, a garden. Bric Mindino, Monte Settepani and Monte Burotto are mountains in the wider surrounding region of Torresina.
When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore combine different interests: historic buildings and memorial sites, marked paths through woodland and valleys, or observations in the landscape between Igliano and Torresina. This allows your choice of accommodation to be aligned with your planned daily rhythm, without reducing Torresina to just a single attraction.
