Discover Canove: Churches, Pantalera and the Roero Bike Tour

Canove lies on the plain along the Alba–Asti state road. The village combines this location with religious buildings, Pantalera tournaments and a stage of the Roero Bike Tour that leads towards Canove.

Churches and monuments in the villagescape

The history of the Church of SS. Annunziata dates back to 1662; it was initially dedicated to San Giorgio. In 1744, it received its present dedication to the Santissima Annunziata for the first time. San Giorgio and Santissima Annunziata thus represent the former and current dedications of the church building. The SS. Annunziata in the Canove hamlet is one of Govone’s significant religious buildings. It stands on Canove’s main square, where Mass is celebrated on Sundays.

The Cappella San Rocco adds a second religious building: the history of the chapel on Via Tanaro in Canove dates back to 1620. The Monumento ai Caduti e dispersi di Canove is also located on the village square. The bronze statue depicts an Alpini soldier supporting a mortally wounded comrade.

Pantalera, Pallapugno and the Sagra di Canove

Canove’s Sferisterio is associated with the traditional Pallapugno and hosts Pantalera tournaments between local teams every year. In Canove di Govone, a well-known Pantalera tournament has been held on summer evenings for almost half a century. The annual Sagra di Canove takes place in the second week of September around the local Sferisterio. Summer evenings at the Sferisterio and the Sagra in the second week of September thus represent two different periods in Canove’s annual calendar.

Cycling towards Canove

Stage 7 of the Roero Bike Tour leads from Govone to Castagnito, is 22.5 km long and offers a 2-km variant. The stage has a difficulty rating of MC. Towards Canove, the route descends along a narrow paved road, offering a beautiful view of Govone and the Tanaro plain. For personal day planning, the 22.5 kilometres, the 2-kilometre variant and the MC rating can be used directly. For a cycling excursion, the stage can be planned in its entirety or with the 2-kilometre variant; the MC rating, the narrow paved road and the descent characterize the downhill section of the Roero Bike Tour towards Canove. The view of Govone and the Tanaro plain accompanies this passage along the ride.

Everyday facilities and villagescape

Canove has a post office, a doctor’s surgery in the former school building, as well as shops, bars and a restaurant. Thus, the villagescape includes everyday amenities in addition to religious buildings and a monument. The Annunziata on the main square, the Monumento on the village square and the Sferisterio with its Pantalera tournaments and Sagra represent different locations in Canove.
