Forest, Stura and Distinctive Landscapes

The area around Pietraporzio includes the hamlet of Pontebernardo, which is overlooked by the Barricate Gorge. Its high, sheer limestone walls drop steeply towards the road and give this section of the landscape a clearly recognisable form. An imposing centuries-old larch bears the name “lou Merze gros” in the local dialect. Together with the fir forests and the Stura River, it creates a landscape in which expansive natural areas and individual characteristic places complement one another directly.

Churches, Campanile and Historic Traces

The Chiesa parrocchiale di Santo Stefano was built from 1787 onwards and completed in 1792. Its single-nave interior has four side chapels. The name “Catre Loupes” of the Campanile dei Catre Loups refers to the animal figures at its summit; near the Pietraporzio cemetery, it is the only surviving remnant of the old parish church. In the part of Pietraporzio located on the orographically right bank of the Stura, there are also remains of medieval arches and cornerstones made of tuff. The building history thus extends from the completed late-18th-century church to the only surviving remnant of the older parish church.

Ecomuseo della Pastorizia in Pontebernardo

The Ecomuseo della Pastorizia in Pontebernardo, a hamlet of Pietraporzio, presents local sheep-farming traditions and the revival of Sambucana sheep breeding. The Ecomuseo includes the Na Draio per Viours museum route, which provides information about sheep breeding and sheep husbandry. It also has a small cheese dairy where school classes can watch sheep’s cheese being made. The route and the cheese dairy therefore focus on two clearly different aspects within the Ecomuseo: traditional sheep husbandry in one, and sheep’s cheese production in the other. In this way, Pontebernardo combines local history with an accessible insight into craftsmanship, animal husbandry and cheese-making.

Hikes and Ski Tours

Pietraporzio offers hikes of varying difficulty starting from the town centre and from the hamlets of Pontebernardo, Murenz and Castello. For winter activities, Pietraporzio offers several ski tours, including the best-known route to Testa di Costabella del Piz. A 900-metre-long nature trail connects the Pontebernardo camping area with Pietraporzio on foot or by bicycle; its length makes it a short connection between the hamlet and the village during the day. The different starting points distribute the hikes between the town centre and the hamlets of Pontebernardo, Murenz and Castello.
