Sanctuary with a long history

The Santuario della SS Vergine Incoronata o del Rosario stands on the site of a parish church already mentioned in documents dating from 1325. In 1773, the Santuario was officially declared a sanctuary. In 1849, it was extended according to a design by the Alba-born architect Giorgio Busca. It was given two bell towers on the façade and a portico in front. Since 1950, the year in which the new parish church in the lower part of the village was consecrated, the building has only held the status of a sanctuary dedicated to the SS. Vergine Incoronata, or the Rosary.

Church art in the Chiesa Parrocchiale

The Chiesa Parrocchiale della Beata Vergine del Rosario was built from 1947 onwards according to a design by Oreste Dellapiana and consecrated in 1950. Inside are works by Mario Michelotti on the two side altars, by Claudio Bonichi in the apse basin and by Eso Peluzzi at the baptismal font. There are also two large paintings by Peluzzi and three paintings by Mario Caffaro Rore in the presbytery. The parish church thus offers an independent point of access to Monchiero's art history, without the village being limited to its sacred buildings.

Musei Peluzzi Bonichi in the Borgo Antico

The Musei Peluzzi Bonichi were reopened in Monchiero's Borgo Antico, in the Chiesa dei Battuti, an Oratorio dei disciplinati. The Chiesa dei Battuti serves as an exhibition venue for the works. From 7 August to 4 September 2026, the Musei Peluzzi Bonichi were open daily except Mondays, from 09:30 to 12:30 and from 16:00 to 19:30.

The upper village of Monchiero comprises a monastery and a few surrounding houses. The upper village is also associated with a house museum, a tomb and a permanent exhibition.
