Holiday apartment in Cardona – discover nature, geology and culture

Cardona is ideal for travelers who want to combine nature, cultural history and geological history in a single stay. Trip planning can incorporate different perspectives: forests and paths, historic architecture, ancient traces or the geological classification of a formation. This allows the stay to be structured around different interests.

Paths through forests and former extraction areas

The Sentiero I Colli Pietrosi passes a small equipped area on the way to Cardona; near the Sant’Agata chapel, the path branches off. After entering Cardona, stage 5 of the trail continues for approximately 3 kilometers through the forests of the Parco Naturale Ex Cave di Cardona. The approximate length of about 3 kilometers classifies the stage as a clearly defined section in the trail planning.

The former Cava di Cardona quarry was once used to extract building materials and was abandoned about fifty years ago. There is also the Cardona Formation: it forms the base of the “Bacino Terziario Piemontese”, and its type locality is in the Cardona hamlet of Alfiano Natta. Geologically, it belongs to the Lower Oligocene, more precisely the Rupelian, and is approximately 33.9 to 27.8 million years old. The Cava is therefore part of the area's history of use; the Cardona Formation is also part of the “Bacino Terziario Piemontese”.

Sant'Eusebio and Roman history

One of Cardona's historic highlights is the Sant'Eusebio church. It dates from the 16th century and has a Latin-cross floor plan. Set into the façade of the rectory next to Sant'Eusebio is a Roman marble funerary stele featuring the busts of a married couple; the stele dates from the 1st century AD. Cardona was also one of Alfiano's hamlets through which Don Bosco passed on this occasion. For days focused on culture, this provides points of interest ranging from architecture and antiquity to local history. The floor plan and the funerary stele offer different accents: the church points to architectural history, while the stele represents a Roman testimony featuring a married couple.

In Alfiano Natta, the restaurant at Agriturismo Crealto serves tasting menus featuring selected, high-quality ingredients. This allows you to complement your trip planning with a culinary theme in addition to forests, rock and sacred architecture. The tasting menus add a culinary facet to the local and landscape themes.
