San Cristoforo is a destination where castle history, sacred sites, a natural cave and a marked trail come together. At its center lies the castle complex surrounded by walls. It includes the Torre del Gazzolo, a polygonal tower with an irregular ground plan and Lombard origins. It was probably built between the 10th and 11th centuries to defend against the Saracens.

Castle and historic sites in San Cristoforo

The castle was built toward the end of the 14th century on the initiative of Opizzino Spinola around the Torre del Gazzolo. The castle complex also contains the parish church of San Cristoforo. It dates from the 15th century and was expanded and remodeled in the 19th century. When planning a visit, it is important to note that access to the castle complex is limited due to its private ownership and numerous stairs.

The other sacred sites also reflect different eras. The ancient Pieve del “Lemmo e dei SS. Giacomo e Cristoforo” was once a shared place of worship for the residents of San Cristoforo and Gavi. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata was built around 1700 near the ancient walls of the settlement and was used for ceremonies to bless the fields and animals.

Nature, remembrance and trails

Near Monte Paganone, in the direction of Parodi Ligure, lies the Grotta dei Partigiani, a natural limestone cave in San Cristoforo. At this site, the municipalities of San Cristoforo and Parodi Ligure installed two memorial plaques commemorating those who fell in this war. Nature and remembrance stand side by side here, without the cave losing its character as a natural limestone formation.

For active days, the Sentiero della Val Lemme provides clear guidance. The San Cristoforo–Monte Erbano stage is 9.9 km long, takes 2 hours and 30 minutes, and is marked with trail marker 290. The Sentiero della Val Lemme can be traveled on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. This means the route can be approached in different ways depending on the desired pace of the day.

Holiday apartment in San Cristoforo for different types of trips

When looking for a holiday apartment in San Cristoforo, you can weigh up different priorities: the castle and church invite you to make historic discoveries, the Grotta dei Partigiani combines nature with remembrance, and the Sentiero della Val Lemme offers opportunities for exercise on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The Sagra “Anlötì Föci a Man” puts handmade agnolotti prepared according to an old traditional recipe at the center. During a three-day Sagra in San Cristoforo, “foci a man” agnolotti with sauce and other dishes were served. The local range of themes therefore extends from architectural history and the sacred past to trail experiences and regional food culture.
