Discover Fermignano: Culture, Nature and Tradition

Fermignano combines architectural landmarks, festival traditions and nature observation. The town’s history includes the Ponte Romano and the Torre Medioevale; Donato Bramante, the Palio events and the visitor centre of the Furlo Nature Reserve add further specific themes.

For trip planning, you can choose between three main focuses: historical themes featuring the Ponte Romano, Torre Medioevale and Bramante; festival traditions with the market and Palio; and nature observation in the Furlo area, as well as the landscape in Pagino Castello with views of the middle and lower Metauro Valley as a third focus within Fermignano itself.

Bridge, Tower and Bramante

A notable landmark is the Ponte Romano di Fermignano. The monumental bridge has three arches made of stone blocks; some sections were partially restored with bricks. The bridge crosses the Metauro. Local tradition considers it to be of Roman origin. The Torre Medioevale of Fermignano, which is 24 metres high, also forms part of the townscape.

In the hamlet of Ca Melle in Fermignano stands the house where Donato Bramante was born in 1444. The circular route “Sui passi del Bramante” honours Fermignano’s connection with the Renaissance architect. Bramante’s connection to Fermignano is therefore represented both by a specific house and as the subject of a dedicated circular route.

Market and Palio Traditions

The Gran Premio del Biciclo Ottocentesco includes a market with three main sections: vintage goods, handicrafts and antiques. The three sections organise the market offering by type of goods and give the event’s theme its own structure.

Palio della Rana and Palio dei Putti

The events also shape Fermignano. The Palio della Rana takes place on the Sunday known as “Domenica in Albis”. At the Palio dei Putti, the youngest members of the Contrade compete against one another on Saturday; they are no more than twelve years old. At the Palio della Rana, a historical procession through the streets of Fermignano’s town centre follows the ceremonial entry of a delegation from the Duchy of Urbino. Thus, the Palio traditions focus both on the competition and on the ceremonial proceedings, with the entry and procession in the town centre.

Nature Observation in Furlo

The visitor centre of the Furlo Nature Reserve includes the Museo del Territorio Lorenzo Mannozzi-Torini. At the visitor centre, visitors can watch live in a classroom what is happening in the golden eagle’s nest. In the area around Fermignano, a resident pair of golden eagles nests in the Furlo Gorge every year. Nature observation connects the visitor centre’s classroom with the habitat in the Furlo Gorge.

Landscape at Monte Pietralata

Pagino Castello is a small, panoramically situated hamlet in the municipality of Fermignano, at the foot of Monte Pietralata. The hamlet lies at an altitude of 390 metres and offers views of the middle and lower Metauro Valley. In addition to the landmarks and festivals, a clearly described elevation with views of the valley is therefore also part of Fermignano’s character.
