Servigliano between History and Landscape

Servigliano combines a clearly planned town centre with historic buildings, the landscape along the River Tenna and regional specialities. The Tenna crosses the municipal area; wooded hills, olive groves and vineyards shape the surrounding landscape.

Town Centre, Gates and Churches

The town centre is laid out as a closed rectangle measuring 144 × 137 metres. The Porta Clementina is also known as the Porta Marina and was built between September 1774 and September 1775. The Porta Pia is also known as the Porta Navarra and was built between November 1776 and July 1777. Construction of the Collegiata San Marco began in 1774; its vault was completed in January 1778. The church houses the relics of San Servigliano and San Gualtiero.

Outside the town lies Santa Maria del Piano, known as Madonna del Piano. The church already existed before the foundation of Castel Clementino. In its present form, it is a single-nave building with seven 18th-century altars. The Franciscan monastery of Servigliano is a two-storey building with a cloister on the River Tenna; its construction was completed in the first half of the 17th century. The Ponte sul fiume Tenna was built between 1842 and 1846.

Remembrance, Festivals and Leisure

The Museo della Memoria is housed in Servigliano’s former railway station. It features a permanent photographic exhibition on the history of the camp and a multimedia room.

Since 1969, the Torneo Cavalleresco di Castel Clementino has brought the historic events of 1450 back to life every August. The parade includes 300 pre-Renaissance costumes created by local neighbourhood tailoring workshops.

Servigliano’s former prisoner-of-war camp is now the Parco della Pace, an equipped green space for leisure and sports activities. The park is also used for large concerts.

The Ippovia del Tenna is a horse-riding, cycling and hiking route along the River Tenna that passes through the municipality of Servigliano. In Servigliano, it has a station at Campo della Quintana. Horses can be accommodated there in paddocks or stalls with hay and water.

Olive oil and wine are produced in the Servigliano area. Typical local foods include Serpe di cioccolato, Ciabuscolo and Vincisgrassi. Local craftspeople work wrought iron and decorate porcelain by hand using the third-fire technique.
