Holiday apartment in Rapagnano: Gates, Churches and Culture

Rapagnano is situated on a hill on the left slope of the valley floor of the Tenna River. The townscape combines historic gates, churches, art and local traditions. Its hillside location on the Tenna provides the geographical setting for buildings, sacred history and local culture. The town’s history ranges from the ancient Fonte della Ripa, considered to be a Roman-era fountain, to churches dating from the 19th century.

Gates, Wall and Fountain

The Porta da Bora is also known as Porta Marina and was rebuilt in its present form in 1707. It was formerly the only entrance to the castle. The Porta da Sole is Rapagnano’s main gate and was rebuilt around 1790. The two gates belong to different reconstruction phases of the townscape.

A well-preserved tower also stands on the access road to Rapagnano. A preserved section of Rapagnano’s ancient fortification wall has an oval shape. The ancient Fonte della Ripa is considered to be a Roman-era fountain. The tower, wall and fountain add further architectural traces with different historical connections to the gate structures.

Churches and Sacred Art

The sacred history includes the Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista, which was built over older churches in the first quarter of the 19th century. Outside Rapagnano lies the rural Chiesa di Santa Colomba, which was rebuilt in the 18th century. The remains of the rural Chiesa di San Tiburzio date from 1507. The religious buildings are located both in Rapagnano and in its rural surroundings and date from different centuries.

Museum, Nativity Scene and Theatre

Since 1999, the Museo Parrocchiale has been housed in a room above the sacristy, where it contains paintings, wooden sculptures and other valuable works of art.

Cultural Traditions

Rapagnano’s permanent Nativity scene occupies an area of approximately 70 square metres. The Teatro G. Emiliani hosts musical and theatrical events, exhibitions and conferences throughout the year.

The patronal festival in honour of San Giovanni Battista in Rapagnano is a traditional celebration. During the patronal festivities, food stalls offering local specialities were planned in Parco Gentili on three evenings.

Viale Europa is approximately 300 metres long and lined with plane trees and horse chestnut trees in double rows.

The nearest motorway exits to Rapagnano are Porto Sant’Elpidio and Fermo–Porto San Giorgio on the A14. The nearest expressway exits to Rapagnano are Morrovalle–Monte San Giusto and Montecosaro on the SS77.
