Fermo Cathedral has a Romanesque-Gothic façade and predominantly Neoclassical interiors. The Romanesque-Gothic façade and the predominantly Neoclassical interiors form two different architectural levels of the same house of worship. The cathedral also contains the foundations of the ancient Early Christian basilica and an 18th-century crypt. The Chiesa San Filippo Neri still preserves extremely valuable decorative and painted features.

Some rooms of Fermo’s Roman cisterns were used until the 1980s.

Library and picture gallery

The Biblioteca Civica Romolo Spezioli looks back on three centuries of history and contains 3,000 manuscripts, 127 codices and 300,000 documents. The picture gallery includes the Sala del Mappamondo as part of the visitor route. The oldest holdings of Fermo’s library are preserved there. The wooden globe in this room was designed by Amanzio Moroncelli in 1713.

Teatro dell’Aquila and Abbazia di San Marco alle Paludi

The Teatro dell’Aquila offers an events programme every year. It includes opera, music, drama and performances for younger audiences.

The Abbazia di San Marco alle Paludi has a glass floor through which the foundations beneath it are visible. It also preserves frescoes, a collection of 8,000 relics, sculptures and paintings. The glass floor places the structural foundations alongside the preserved features consisting of frescoes, relics, sculptures and paintings.

Panorama and regional cuisine

The park on Colle del Girfalco in Fermo is a panoramic terrace with numerous centuries-old plants. Here, panoramic views and centuries-old vegetation come together in one area.

Traditional Fermo cuisine includes typical cured meats such as ciauscolo, strongly flavoured cheeses and first courses such as vincisgrassi. The rural confectionery tradition also includes ciambellotto, associated with threshing and served with vino cotto. Fermo can be reached from Porto San Giorgio via State Road 16 in the direction of Fermo. The city can also be reached via the Porto San Giorgio-Fermo exit of the A14 motorway, “Bologna–Canosa”.
