The Castello of Monte Urano has a triangular layout and three small squares connected by six narrow alleys. From Piazza della Libertà, it can be reached via a paved road.

The Torre dell'Orologio is also known as Porta Nova; it was built in the 18th century and connects Piazza della Libertà with the ancient Castello. Inside, it preserves an original clock mechanism from the late 19th century that is still functioning; visitors can view its gears. Porta del Sole is the only surviving original gate of the medieval castle, and people still pass beneath its arch today.

The towers, too, tell different chapters of the town's history: the Torre Civica, also known as the Torrione, dates from the 13th or 14th century and was converted from a military installation into the bell tower of the former Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo. This church has a Latin-cross layout, three naves and a dome on an octagonal drum.

The Chiesa di San Rocco was built at the beginning of the 16th century; in 1583, the Compagnia della Pietà was established there under the name Compagnia del Gonfalone. Its recently restored altar features marble effects, carvings and gilded woodwork. The small Chiesa di Santa Maria Apparente probably dates from the 14th or 15th century. From 13 May to 9 November 1999, restoration and rehabilitation work was carried out on its roof and exterior wall. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is a rectangular neoclassical building with a single nave.

Shoemaking, festivals and regional cuisine

The shoemaking tradition in Monte Urano can be traced back to the first decades of the 19th century. Shoemaker's workshops already existed there in 1808, and by 1815 the craft was widespread among numerous artisans. The workshops produce so-called “chiochiere”: flat slippers made of smooth or braided leather, with fabric lining and no heel.

The Mercatino della calzatura e dell’artigianato is organised as a series of summer evenings featuring shoe shopping, music, leisure activities and food offerings. The 48th Carnevale Monturanese includes a parade with floats and masked groups through the town centre. The Festa di San Michele Arcangelo is a patronal festival in honour of Saint Michael, which took place from 7 May to 17 May 2026. At the Sagra dei Vincisgrassi, handmade baked pasta is prepared in the traditional manner and baked in a wood-fired oven.

River landscape on the outskirts of Monte Urano

Parco Fluviale Alex Langer is located on the left bank of the Tenna River on the outskirts of Monte Urano. The path through the park follows the course of the Ete Vivo and passes through areas with old trees, native plants and local wildlife. In this way, the river landscape complements the town's historical and artisanal aspects with a focus close to nature.
