Serra de' Conti is located in the Marche region on the heights of the Misa Valley, amid gentle, undulating and agriculturally shaped hills. The landscape, medieval town centre, monastic history and local traditions define the town.
The Centro Storico is protected by a well-preserved medieval ring of walls and can be accessed via Corso Roma or Piazza IV Novembre. On the western side of Serra de' Conti, the Porta della Croce was built in 1431 as part of the town walls. A work by Bruno d'Arcevia is still visible in its lunette. Thus, in the historic centre, architectural history and art come together in specific locations.

The Torre Civica was originally built as a fortified tower during a period between the 13th and 14th centuries that has not been precisely determined. The tower is not accessible; its clock mechanism can be seen through a glass door at Corso Roma 35. The religious buildings also represent different historical layers: the Chiesa di San Michele was built in 1290 by Camaldolese Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Santa Maria di Sitria. The Chiesa di Santa Maria “De Abbatissis” was built in the first half of the 13th century and belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of S. Croce di Sassoferrato in 1252.
The Santa Maria Maddalena complex is particularly rich in historical layers. The monastery was rebuilt in the 16th century and has a large tower as well as a church with Baroque interior furnishings. Within the monastery complex of the same name, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena has an elliptical floor plan. Its wooden furnishings, featuring ornaments of high artistic quality, display old materials and original colours that were restored through more recent restoration work. In the Chiesa di Santa Maria “De Abbatissis”, Blessed Gherardo is displayed in a glass urn in a chapel dedicated to him for the veneration of the faithful.
For visitors who want to discover Serra de' Conti on foot and by listening, the Museo delle Arti Monastiche offers a sound walk. It leads through the town’s streets, lanes, viewpoints, squares and small piazzas. A poetic route designed by Gio Evan in the historic centre includes ten poems hidden in the lanes. The Nottenera project supports creatives and artists through productions and residencies; the “GIGETTO 1910” workshop develops individually made wooden accessories.
Cicerchia, crafts and special moments in the town
At the Festa della Cicerchia, the legume of the same name takes centre stage for three days, from 24 November to 26 November. Around a hundred dishes are served in local “cantine del buon gusto”. After being preserved, produced and promoted by local farmers, cicerchia received recognition as a “Slow Food Presidium”. The Festa della Cicerchia also showcases traditional craft techniques involving wood, willow, terracotta, copper, iron, lace, sewing and embroidery.
At the Canto della Pasquella, hot polenta and a glass of wine are served at the end in Piazza Matteotti. For travel to Serra de' Conti, the nearest railway stations are in Senigallia and Jesi; from there, the town can be reached by scheduled buses.
